Working for the Department/Faculty

The Infrastructure Development team within the unit of Facilities & Operations at the University of Alberta is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Architectural Technologist / Lead Project Designer to join our dynamic team. The Campus Planning & Architecture team is dedicated to developing in-house Preliminary Design, Schematic Design, and Design Development solutions for select projects, focusing on enhancing the university’s built environment. We focus on feasibility and preliminary design, providing pros and cons through scenario studies with graphic representation. Our work includes program-test fits, confirming intent, goals, and Class D estimates. Once funded, the project proceeds into schematic design and design development phases. We are currently seeking an Architectural Technologist to join our dynamic team.

Position

Reporting to the Manager of Campus Architecture, the Architectural Technologist is responsible for leading the planning and architectural technical design of renovation projects completed by in-house design services on Campus. This role ensures that all University of Alberta projects are properly supported by technical planning and design experts.

Duties

  • Provide architectural technical design services for renovation
  • Manage detailed project design, identifying the application requirements of the Alberta Building Code and the University’s Design and Construction Standards & Guidelines
  • Collaborate with Space Planners to understand the space program, priorities, and pre-design test fit intent
  • Create architectural planning and design drawings electronically and develop technical specifications
  • Collaborate with multi-discipline designs and coordinate with Electrical and Mechanical technologists
  • Review and approve shop drawings and samples, ensuring compliance with approved scopes and design solutions
  • Collaborate with the Space Planner, Project Manager, client, and design team to address unforeseen issues and develop problem-solving strategies
  • Assist in the final inspection of completed work, creating a list of deficiencies for completion
  • Complete contract documentation for project files after project closure
  • Assist in project implementation to achieve critical goals of approved scope and design solutions in balance with budget and schedule
  • Assign and track the official assignment of room numbers
  • Provide accurate as-built drawings to update project record and inventory databases
  • Coordinate safety code compliance site inspections and review design compliance with the Quality Management Plan
  • Assist with the maintenance of project record and inventory databases

Minimum Qualifications

  • Diploma in Architectural Technology from an accredited program
  • Ability to pivot, adapt, and balance changing or conflicting priorities
  • Working understanding of code requirements of the Alberta Building Code or equivalent
  • Thorough understanding of Accessibility Codes and the ability to lead complicated design solution processes in support of the institution’s EDI Initiatives
  • Proficiency in design software tools: AutoCAD, Revit 3D modeling, Bluebeam, Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign), Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), or equivalent programs

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5 years of experience in a leadership capacity in multi-discipline integrated design teams leading to successful project outcomes
