The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at The University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for a full-time faculty position as the holder of the Donald B. Rix Professorship in Laboratory Quality at UBC at the rank of Associate Professor (grant tenure). This position is based in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at UBC’s Point Grey Campus.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UBC is a hybrid, academically intensive Department within the UBC Faculty of Medicine. Activities span a broad spectrum of teaching, research, and academic service, often performed in the milieu of clinical practice, and are ultimately devoted to improving the care, treatment, and well-being of patients. The Department offers academic degrees at the bachelor’s (Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLSc) and graduate (MSc, PhD) levels, with the graduate program, one of the largest in the Faculty of Medicine, and is recognized by UBC for its quality. The Department plays a major role in the MD undergraduate program and offers an accredited residency-training program. Faculty members participate across a spectrum of research from basic investigative to translational to clinical applied research and are recognized locally, nationally and internationally for their excellence.

Reporting to the Head of the UBC Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, the successful candidate will lead a translational research and education program in laboratory quality management. The successful candidate will be expected to lead a research program with potential to be of international caliber, participate in the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate teaching activities of the unit, and to develop and oversee a graduate program in laboratory quality processes and systems for working professionals. The successful candidate will build upon the Department’s existing laboratory quality initiatives including the Clinical Microbiology Proficiency Testing Program (CMPT) and the Program Office of Laboratory Quality Management (POLQM). As an ISO accredited program, CMPT is an education and outreach platform that provides external quality assessment samples for provincial, national and international laboratories. POLQM provides laboratory quality education through a certificate program in laboratory quality management as well as an investigative service regarding laboratory error through its collaboration with the BC Patient Safety Learning System. The incumbent will also work closely with the Provincial Health Services Authority Laboratory Medicine Services and other key stakeholders.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD, MD, or MD/PhD with demonstrated training and experience in laboratory quality. We encourage candidates with a diversity of academic backgrounds related to quality, including pathology, statistics, pharmaceutical sciences and engineering, to apply for this position. The successful candidate will have exceptional interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated track record in both creating and sustaining an independent research program, as well as being an effective and accomplished educator. The successful candidate must be able to establish and maintain high-quality, productive relationships across cultural differences and work in a collaborative and inclusive manner, fostering equitable experiences and a respectful environment for all staff, faculty, and students. The successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of ability in teaching and will be expected to provide service to the University and the broader academic and professional community.
