Osteoporosis Canada (OC), a registered charity, is the only national organization serving people who have, or are at risk for, osteoporosis. OC works to educate, empower and support individuals and communities in the treatment of osteoporosis and fracture risk reduction strategies.

Reporting to the Community Engagement Manager, the Community Engagement Coordinator (CEC) will oversee the Osteoporosis Canada (OC) volunteer program in Region 1 (BC and Alberta) including the recruitment, training and coordination of volunteers. Responsibilities include: attracting and retaining volunteers whose interests and values match those of OC; education and training of volunteers for the Fracture Prevention Education volunteer program, providing meaningful opportunities for the volunteers to contribute while ensuring that their needs and the needs and objectives of the organization are simultaneously met.

The successful candidate will be based in Alberta.

Territory: Region 1 – BC and Alberta

 

Role and Accountabilities

  • With support, manage and execute the annual volunteer plan and budget for Region 1 under the direction of the Community Engagement Manager
  • Become familiar with Volunteer Management policies and procedures, which guide national and provincial volunteer programs to align with the organization’s objectives and values, and with the guiding principles and standards of practice as set by the Canadian Code for Volunteer Involvement, including risk assessment
  • Coordinate volunteer recruitment and hiring process by creating position descriptions, advertising and promoting opportunities, interviewing, matching with appropriate roles and often providing orientation, onboarding, training and support.
  • Identify and assess volunteer needs and opportunities to meet operational and partnership requirements and enhance program delivery services in Region 1
  • Develop, promote and maintain a wide range of volunteer opportunities within Region 1
  • Conduct training, provide orientation materials and ongoing support and guidance for volunteers
  • Cultivate a positive and supportive atmosphere by recognizing volunteer efforts, assisting volunteers with their responsibilities and evaluating the volunteer experience
  • Organize and participate in volunteer recognition programs and special events
  • Attend volunteer recruiting events within the community and identify community outreach opportunities such as health fairs and tradeshow shows
  • Develop and maintain relations with other volunteer organizations
  • Manage volunteer policies, procedures and standards of volunteer service
  • Maintain database of volunteers and projects
  • Work to implement volunteer based partnership programs together with the Fund Development department to support locally based fundraising initiatives
  • Develop and implement effective strategies to recruit, onboard, train and retain volunteers
  • Communicate and build relationship with community and corporate partners, donors and volunteers
  • Together with the Community Engagement Manager, coordinate bi-annual training and/or regional meetings
  • Report quarterly on agreed upon metrics
  • Provides day to day supervision and training of volunteers
  • Encourage and oversee the participation of prospective volunteers in the Volunteer Education Training (VET) Program
  • Other duties as required

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 – 2 years’ experience in volunteer management and program delivery in a health-related industry
  • Certification in Volunteer Management is an asset
  • A self-starter with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to manage volunteers across two provinces and liaise with remote staff to meet organizational deliverables
  • Excellent organizational, coordination and facilitation skills
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to write and communicate well-defined reports to management and external stakeholders
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with a diverse range of people
  • Experience of managing or coordinating projects and volunteers
  • The ability to deal with information in a confidential manner and respond with sensitivity
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to manage a variety of tasks
  • Administrative and computer skills, and an ability to maintain records and produce clear written and oral reports
  • Strong understanding of volunteer database management systems
  • Experience of working across different sectors and developing links with other agencies
  • The ability to deal with information in a confidential manner and respond with sensitivity
  • An empathy with volunteers and an understanding of their needs
  • The capacity to inspire and motivate others
  • A flexible and non-judgmental approach to people and work
