ABOUT DIRECTIONS YOUTH SERVICES

Directions Youth Services is a collection of services and locations supporting vulnerable youth. This includes a 24-hour drop-in centre, outreach teams, pre-employment programs, two safe houses, and a youth detox centre. The trauma-informed and client centred philosophy creates safety for youth to access a full spectrum of supports including primary care, mental health and substance use resources.

Directions is a division of Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV), which for 90 years has provided trauma counselling and essential resources for children, families and individuals facing life’s challenges.

HERE’S WHAT WE CAN DO TOGETHER

This is a full-time, 35hrs/wk position that serves homeless, at risk, street-involved, and street-entrenched youth, and takes a leadership role in internal case management and maintaining the safety of the resource. This position provides guidance, information and referral to youth accessing the centre, promoting safety and, where possible, assisting in their transition from the street to healthier, alternative lifestyles. This position takes on a mentoring role with Peer Support Workers, practicum students, and others in the Day Program. This position reports to the Assistant Manager of Directions Youth Services Centre. Hours of work: Monday-Friday – 8am to 4pm

YOUR KEY CONTRIBUTIONS

  • Intake and assessment of new clients’ access, pre-screening, and determining if they are an appropriate fit for the program, and well as making referrals when required.
  • Identify individual needs for youth accessing the centre and provide support, encouragement, collaboration and education to clients in matters related to crisis intervention, harm reduction, conflict resolution, community resources, alcohol and drug information, and advocacy to clients and referral calls utilizing youth social work best practice.
  • Initiate MCFD involvement where appropriate to develop and support Integrated Case Management strategies.
  • Maintain appropriate notes, statistics, logs and critical incident reports in a professional and thorough manner in the online database when applicable.
  • Ensure adherence to all program and agency policies, procedures, safety standards, and accreditation standards including the Centre’s Facility Management Plan.
  • General cleaning and upkeep of the centre.
  • In absence of supervisor, offer “leadership supports” to staff, and practicum students.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with all FSGV Youth Services, other community agencies, and government ministries as appropriate in the development of youth case management.
  • Be responsive to inter-program Integrated Case Management plans, other service agencies and health care professionals in the implementation and revision of client service plans/ terms of service, service provisions, or service restrictions.
  • Assist youth in accessing community support by advocating for services; escorting, and transporting clients to outside service referral locations, as appropriate.

WHAT YOU BRING

Education and training:

  • Bachelor degree in Social Work or other relevant education
  • Current First Aid Certificate
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training an asset
  • Food Safe Certification an asset

Experience:

  • Three (3) years experience working at risk and/or homeless youth in areas such as child protection, life skill development, community support and /or community outreach

 

Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
