ABOUT DIRECTIONS YOUTH SERVICES

Directions Youth Services is a collection of services and locations supporting vulnerable youth. This includes a 24-hour drop-in centre, outreach teams, pre-employment programs, two safe houses, and a youth detox centre. The trauma-informed and client centred philosophy creates safety for youth to access a full spectrum of supports including primary care, mental health and substance use resources.

Directions is a division of Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV), which for 90 years has provided trauma counselling and essential resources for children, families and individuals facing life’s challenges.

HERE’S WHAT WE CAN DO TOGETHER

Street Youth Job Action (SYJA) is a low-barrier, pre-employment, same day work and peer engagement program for marginalized, homeless and at risk young people aged 16-24.  The SYJA program operates Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:00-4:00 PM. The SYJA Coordinator oversees the day to day operations, reporting and Supervise the SYJA Support Worker. SYJA supports participants by identifying their unique barriers to employment; help develop basic life and job readiness skills. This position involves travel throughout the day to provide outreach support and supervision to “street youth crews” on designated street cleaning routes (Downtown Core, including Downtown South and the West End) and assisting youth in the navigation of services as they transition to accessing safer lifestyles. The SYJA Program Coordinator is a 35 hr/week position that reports to the Directions Youth Services Manager.

YOUR KEY CONTRIBUTIONS

Daily Program Operations and Administration

  • Provide supervision, guidance and overall support to the SYJA Support Worker.
  • Organize food and clothing donations, garbage and recycling and providing youth with appropriate working gear
  • Quality Control: GPS Tracking to support and monitor youth routes
  • Scheduling routes: Identifying youth strengths and challenges; triggers; red zones
  • Maintain program documentation, monthly reports and client files

Youth Work/ Case Management and Life Skills:

  • Assist youth to achieve work related goals through regular supervision and support
  • Ensure a welcoming and respectful environment that reflects the diverse youth population we serve, establish a trusting, non-judgmental, respectful rapport
  • Create and support structured routines and schedule
  • Actively promote positive youth involvement in the community
  • Assessment and goal oriented service plans in support of youth readiness for, confidence in and motivation for change
  • Provide information and referral on services and opportunities available to youth
  • Develop and facilitate with basic life skills training in areas such as: Employment readiness, basic communication skills, hygiene, budgeting, money management Provide youth with one-to-one counselling, support, referral and crisis intervention.

WHAT YOU BRING

Education and training:

  • Bachelor degree in Social Work or other relevant education
  • Current First Aid Certificate
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training an asset
  • Food Safe Certification an asset

Experience:

  • Three (3) years experience working at risk and/or homeless youth in areas such as child protection, life skill development, community support and /or community outreach

Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
