Position will be responsible for running routine organic experiments necessary for route optimization of a multi-step synthesis.
Reports directly to the PI involved in the project (Prof. Sammis). The position will update the PI on experiment progress weekly (minimum). Due to current personnel restrictions, a graduate student will provide oversight and supervision to ensure consistent proper laboratory safety protocols are followed. The supervising graduate student will be the lead of the synthetic efforts, and the technician will assist with the experiments.
Responsible for optimizing an already established synthetic pathway. The key deliverable will be the successfully optimized synthetic route. This includes:
solvent optimization, purification optimization, and reagent optimization
conducts synthetic experiments
coordinates route optimization
Consequence of Error/Judgement
All technical and project direction aspects of this project will be the responsibility of the PI. The only decision making required for this position is safety considerations for the chemistry. The project will be directly checked and supervised by the lead graduate student and/or PI.
The only judgment that will be required is decisions about how to run the reaction (i.e. solvent choices, temperature, purification decisions, etc.). Poor decision making/improper safety protocols will result in termination of the position.
This position will be supervised (for safety purposes) by one graduate student. The project will be supervised by the PI. Works within established experiment guidelines and procedures. Determines priorities for required tasks through to completion, referring new and/or unusual problems/results to supervisor.
Minimum completion of a two-year lab-based program. BSc in chemistry preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some synthetic organic research experience would be an asset.
Skills and abilities
Synthetic organic research skills, including setting up chemical reactions, column purification, extraction, distillation, operating and NMR spectrometer, and basic level understanding of interpretation.
