TEACHING AND INSTRUMENT LABORATORY TECHNICIAN (P1887)

Reporting to the Technical Officer, the incumbent ensures the academic quality and safe operation of teaching laboratories for the Department of Biology in the areas of animal physiology, invertebrate biology, vertebrate biology, and ecology. He/she also provides technical support in the maintenance and repair of equipment used in teaching and in common research facilities, and performs other duties in support of the unit.
- Responsible for the quality and preparedness of teaching laboratories. Manage the set-up of all equipment and supplies required for assigned teaching labs in the areas of animal physiology, invertebrate biology, vertebrate biology, and ecology.
- Ensure equipment readiness in teaching laboratories and in common research facilities. Operate, maintain, repair and troubleshoot equipment, which includes autoclaves, centrifuges, cold rooms, digital imaging systems, eye washes, Speedvac, microscopes and water systems.
- Participate in the revision of laboratory manuals.
- Optimize and implement laboratory protocols associated with the course and recommend changes when needed.
- Purchase supplies for assigned laboratories and ensure all materials are available when required.
- Ensure adherence to safety regulations and proper laboratory procedures.
- Instruct individuals on the use of various scientific equipment.
- Perform duties and maintain facilities according to University health and safety standards.
- Maintain up-to-date preparation notes.
- Work with fellow technicians during peak times.
- Perform other duties in support of the unit.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or a relevant discipline and at least two (2) years of associated experience.
- Good knowledge of biodiversity, aquatic ecology, and plant biology an asset.
- Experience in working with laboratory animals.
- Superior knowledge of animal physiology, invertebrate biology, vertebrate biology, and ecology.
- Working knowledge microscopy (compound and dissecting microscopes)
- Good technical knowledge and equipment maintenance skills. Capable of troubleshooting, performing routine maintenance, and conducting minor repairs on laboratory equipment.
- Good knowledge of laboratory health and safety regulations including WHMIS.
- Superior organizational skills in order to effectively organize work and set priorities under time constraints.
- Superior interpersonal and communication skills as well as the ability to work in a team environment.
- Good knowledge (Intermediate level) of Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to work evenings and the occasional weekend.
- Good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken and written English in order to instruct and to write experimental procedures and instructions. Basic knowledge (Level 3) of spoken French in order to answer routine questions; written French an asset.
- Physical ability to set-up and take down assigned laboratories, to maintain laboratory equipment and facilities and to work in noisy environments as attested by successful completion of medical evaluation to the University’s satisfaction. Work wearing personal protective equipment when required.
$27.53 – $41.39 per hour
