Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Indigenous Curriculum and Pedagogies
The Faculty of Education in the University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for a full-time position at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track) in Indigenous Curriculum and Pedagogies in the Department of Curriculum & Pedagogy. The start date for this position is July 1, 2021, or as negotiated with the successful candidate.
UBC’s Faculty of Education is a leader in the field of Indigenous Education. This position will contribute Indigenous pedagogical and research expertise in curriculum and pedagogy to one or more program areas offered by the Department, at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Of particular interest is developing transformative curricular and pedagogical approaches that will contribute to the improvement of Indigenous education, especially at the K-12 levels. This position will provide leadership to the Faculty’s Indigenous educational initiatives, and contribute to and advance research capacity in this key area.
Applicants to this position are required to have earned a Doctorate in Education with an emphasis on curriculum and pedagogy in relation to Indigenous Studies. In depth knowledge of Indigenous knowledge practises and cultures, including cultural protocols is essential. The candidate must have a record of research dissemination, in terms of peer-reviewed articles in recognized academic journals in the field, and evidence of presentations at scholarly conferences. Demonstrated ability to participate in scholarly activity and to secure competitive research funding is required. The candidate must also demonstrate the ability to provide effective instruction at various levels in their areas of study and the potential to supervise graduate students. In addition, the successful candidate will have experience working in Teacher Education and demonstrate the expertise and experience to infuse transformative pedagogies that acknowledge and respond effectively to the cultural diversity within our present day BC, Canadian and international classrooms.
The successful applicant will be expected to:
1) maintain an active research and scholarly program in the areas related to Indigenous Curriculum and Pedagogies,
2) teach in undergraduate and graduate programs coordinated by the Department,
3) supervise graduate students enrolled in the Department’s programs,
4) contribute to the scholarly community and service work of the Department, the Faculty of Education and the University, and
5) participate in outreach within the broader educational community.

The Department offers a number of graduate programs at both the Master’s and PhD levels, some of which are structured as research themed cohorts.

This is a tenure track position in the Professoriate Stream. The successful candidate will be reviewed for reappointment, tenure and promotion in subsequent years, in accordance with the Collective Agreement. A detailed description of the rank of Assistant Professor and the criteria for reappointment and promotion can be found on our website. Starting salary is determined both by the candidate’s qualifications and experience and by their placement on the career progress scale within the UBC Faculty of Education. The position is subject to final budgetary approval.
