The Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies (LA&PS) is the largest Faculty at York University with over 22,000 undergraduate and graduate students, and almost 100 programs delivered through 25 Departments, Schools and Colleges. Through innovative course design, diverse experiential education and learning opportunities, and a supportive community environment, our students receive the education they need to create big ideas that have an impact on the world.Working directly with the Dean, Associate Dean, Faculty Affairs (ADFA) and the broader LA&PS leadership team, the Director, Policy & Governance will be responsible for providing leadership, advice and support regarding policies, procedures, legal contracts and documents (e.g. employment documentation, student abroad course agreements, vendor contracts, etc.), governance and optimal academic human resources and labour relations practices, systems and processes within LA&PS to ensure the achievement of the Faculty’s strategic priorities. The Director, working closely with the ADFA, the Manager, Faculty Affairs, Manager, Faculty Council and the teams, will support the, Faculty Affairs and Faculty Council portfolios. This individual will also participate in collective agreement administration, dispute resolution and collective bargaining as requested.
In addition to liaising regularly with Office of the AVP Labour Relations (Faculty Relations) and the Office of the Counsel, he/she will act as a key contact between the Faculty and the Provost & Vice-President Academic’s Office in the area of faculty recruiting, supporting LA&PS’s efforts to recruit and retain world class faculty, and will work with the Faculty Affairs team to provide advice and support for sabbatical and other leaves, tenure and promotion and other collective agreement matters. The incumbent will act as a liaison between LA&PS and central Faculty Relations regarding collective agreement matters pertaining to the York University Faculty Association (YUFA) and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 3903). This individual will also support academic leaders within LA&PS and represent the Faculty in productively resolving academic employment-related issues, including workplace accommodations, in coordination with central Faculty Relations, the Employee Well-Being Office and/or the Office of the Counsel (as applicable), and will take a proactive role in developing a positive relationship with faculty members. In addition, they will provide advising for various legal contracts and documents in consultation with Office of the Counsel as required on behalf of the Office of the Dean; will advise on non-academic employee relations matters as requested in consultation with the Director, Human Resources, LA&PS and the Executive Director, Strategy & Administration and Office of AVP Labour Relations (Employee Relations) and Office of AVP Human Resources as required.
LLB or J.D. and member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
5 years of relevant experience with a strong emphasis on labor law in a unionized public-sector environment; expert knowledge of labour relations, including applicable legislation, Collective Agreement administration, principles and best practices, and current legal trends is required. Negotiation and litigation experience are assets. Post- secondary governance experience is considered an asset.
Proven success in building relationships and fostering a positive, inclusive organizational culture within a dynamic and complex environment. Ability to effectively work with and influence all levels of management, including a strong track record of collaboration; comprehensive understanding of university/public sector governance, policies and procedures. Demonstrated flexibility, adaptability and excellent organizational skills, effective interpersonal, team-leadership and project management skills, demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with multiple competing demands; high degree of integrity with the ability to handle confidential and politically sensitive issues and difficult situations in a tactful and diplomatic manner; demonstrated strong leadership, coaching and team building skills in order to foster, motivate and support an environment of high performance, trust and collaboration; strong solutions-focused problem solving skills; strategic planning skills and commitment to excellence, with the ability to conceptualize and action initiatives to improve processes and systems. Ability to communicate complex concepts for various stakeholders in a manner that is clear and concise. Proven negotiating and advising skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, including drafting legal documents and contracts, excellent analytical and research skills, report writing, conflict resolution skills, and sound knowledge of employment and labour law. Proficient with MS Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint).
