What responsibilities will you have in this role?
Reporting to the Vice President (VP), Student Success, the Manager, Athletics and Recreation is responsible for facilitating the operations and developing the programming for all Huskies varsity athletics and campus recreation activities at George Brown College. The purpose of the position is to enhance the college’s model of the optimal student experience through the development of quality extracurricular opportunities relating to active lifestyle and wellness. Within the context of the current health pandemic, the Manager will have a specific focus on facilitating ongoing engagement of student athletes, overseeing return to campus and return to varsity sport activities, and broadening access and inclusion to community wellbeing programming through on-line health promotion and recreation activity.
- Designs and implements intercollegiate and campus-wide extracurricular activities collaborating with students, student leaders, employees, and alumni.
- Leads coordinators, coaches, and college partners in developing programs and initiatives to widen access to physical activity, recreation, sport, and wellbeing among students from equity-deserving communities
- Promotes academic success and eligibility of varsity athletes (approximately 200 annually), and partners with relevant academic advising and support services to ensure that student athletes are successful in their studies to maintain both their athletic and academic eligibilities at the College.
- Partners with Facilities Resources to develop and maintain high level of facility standards, including operation and maintenance of all athletic centres.
- Develops cost efficient strategies for new and existing programs; creates new fundraising initiatives.
- Prepares a full budget report and quarterly business continuity reports to the Vice President.
- Develops the annual department business plan including goals and objectives to help the college meet its strategic goals.
- Establishes and implements policies and procedures for departmental operations; develops new and improves existing programs which will meet student and staff needs.
- Reviews departmental performance and implements changes as required to improve services and ensure that regulatory requirements are met.
- Responsible for the effective operation of all staff resources including conducting annual performance reviews for all full-time staff and a coach’s review for all coaching staff.
- Acts as the primary contact with the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association, Canadian Colleges Athletic Association, provincial and national sport governing bodies, and all athletic and recreation service providers and suppliers.
- Functions as a partner with student leaders in the development and delivery of campus recreation, sport, and wellness activities.
- Other related duties as assigned.
What qualifications do you need for this role?
- Four-year degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, in Sports Administration/Management, Recreation Leadership, Kinesiology or equivalent is required.
- Demonstrated leadership and experience in promoting engagement in physical activity, health and wellbeing programming, and competitive sport across diverse and equity-deserving communities.
- First Aid/CPR training, National Coaching Certification Program-Community Sport.
- Minimum of five years’ experience in post-secondary student services/student affairs in sport and recreation program and event management in amateur, recreational, or professional sports setting.
- Experience in large scale budget management and capital project planning an asset.
- Knowledgeable and experienced liaising with local, provincial, or national sport governing bodies.
- Experience leading/managing teams to high performance levels and collaboratively managing a diverse team within a unionized environment.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and successfully execute business plans and budget management.
- Demonstrated advanced interpersonal, negotiation, conflict resolution, problem-solving skills, and a solution-focused approach to addressing challenges.
- Team building, event planning and risk management experience is needed.
- Ability to manage stressful and complex time-sensitive situations with a high degree of diplomacy and discretion.
- Experience in advising and working with students, as well as interacting with senior level managers an asset.
- Exceptional organizational and analytical skills.
- Demonstrated leadership in delivering excellent service to others as this is key in supporting the success of our students and our College.
- Effective ability to interact with others and deal with situations in ways that respect diverse backgrounds, experience and styles.
- Flexibility in adapting to change and in participating in consultative decision-making processes.
