Position Description
Developed by The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Empower™ Reading is a set of evidence-based reading programs for children and adolescents with reading difficulties. As an Empower™ Teacher Mentor with the Empower™ Reading and Learning Group, you will facilitate Empower™ Reading training workshops and provide ongoing mentoring and coaching to Empower™ trainees to effectively implement the program.
Here’s What You’ll Get To Do:
Participate in and assist at training workshops for Empower™ Reading trainees, using training guidelines developed by the Empower™ Reading team.
Engage trainees in a positive learning environment by facilitating individual and group work using several techniques (e.g., modeling, role playing).
Support, coach and mentor trainees (teachers) through observation of program implementation during classroom visits (onsite or via videoconferencing) to improve commitment to instruction and maximize student outcomes.
Provide constructive feedback to trainees (e.g., modeling program content, providing suggestions for improving classroom set-up, reviewing upcoming instructional content). Complex issues may be brought back for discussion to the Empower™ Reading team to ensure program consistency.
Identify the learning needs of the trainees through information from formal needs assessments, written requests, email correspondence, telephone calls, etc.
Arrange dates for coaching visits with trainees and complete and maintain appropriate records of learner development for program evaluation reports/recommendations as required.
Participate in presentations about Empower™ Reading to teachers, administrators, parents and other potential clients.
Support the Empower™ Reading team to promote and market the program.
Participate in Empower™ Reading team meetings and provide updates on the progress of assigned trainees.
Participate in curriculum development and training, as required.
Contribute to the preparation and organization of training workshop materials (e.g. handouts) and the learning environment and resources at time of workshops.
Participate in coordinating activities required to facilitate training (e.g., venue bookings, printing materials).
Ensure resources, materials and supplies are ready in advance of each session.
Frequent travel to schools/client locations to provide onsite coaching/mentoring and training is required.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
Post-secondary education (University Degree or Community College Diploma), preferably in Education, Adult Learning, Training.
Certificate in Teaching, and particularly Special Education additional qualifications, is an asset.
Experience in delivering the Empower™ Reading program to completion to groups of students in a school setting is an asset.
5 years’ practical experience as a trainer/facilitator/instructor in adult learning programs is an asset.
Valid Ontario Driver’s License and a reliable personal vehicle (reasonable compensation for travel expenses will be provided and in accordance to Hospital’s policies and procedures).
Significant strengths in engaging learners and creating and maintaining a positive learning environment are required.
Exceptional oral communication skills to disseminate information about Empower™ Reading in a concise and coherent manner is essential.
Ability to establish and maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with colleagues and clients.
Strong analytical and problem solving skills to address the specific needs of Empower™ Reading trainees and their students when working in the classroom/tutorial environments.
Exceptional time management and organizational skills
The ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
Employment Type: Full-time Temporary 1 Year Contract, 1.0 FTE
