The Ministry of Trade and Export Development is looking for an experienced, strategic and motivated leader to join our Marketing and Communications Branch as Manager of Communications. This position will also provide communications services to the Ministries of Energy and Resources and Immigration and Career Training through a shared-services agreement.
Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Communications Manager will provide strategic communications leadership, guidance and support to the Deputy Minister and Senior Managers with respect to media relations and issues management within the ministries and the Government of Saskatchewan.
As the Communications Manager, you will:
Manage comprehensive communications framework and approaches to ensure alignment of overall strategic direction for three ministries with government as a whole;
Initiate and/or direct the writing and editing of a wide array of communications products including communications strategies, speeches, news releases, key messages, backgrounders, publications, etc.;
Manage the communication of highly-sensitive and high-profile issues;
Lead the responses to media inquiries, provide advice and assistance to senior staff on media inquiries, determine appropriate responses and spokespersons, and act as ministry spokesperson; and
Consult and liaise with Executive Council staff to ensure government-wide communications policies, procedures and other considerations are consistently reflected in ministries initiatives.
As the ideal candidate, you will have:
Experience as a strategic leader with superior verbal and written communications skills, interpersonal skills, leadership and the capacity to excel in high-pressure situations;
Excellent organizational and time management skills;
The ability to motivate, coach and manage the performance of Communications Consultants;
Knowledge of strategic communication principles, theories and tools;
Expertise in media relations, issues management and strategic communications;
A proven ability to lead and collaborate with a reputation for integrity and a focus on service excellence and innovation;
The ability to research, analyze and integrate complex and often sensitive information from numerous sources in a timely manner; and
The ability to exercise judgement and discretion in managing sensitive or critical issues.
Typically, the skills and knowledge for this position will have been gained through the completion of a university degree in journalism, communications, or related field of study, combined with extensive experience in media and corporate communications or an equivalent combination of education, experience and track record of achievement. Communications experience in government will be beneficial.
