PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The Field Medical Advisor will serve as a field-based clinical and medical expert responsible for providing fair balanced, objective, scientific information and education about Santen Canada’s pharma and device product(s) as well as gathers medical insights through peer-to-peer interactions with thought leaders, investigators and other healthcare providers to better patient outcomes. The Field Medical Advisor will be the medical lead for Canada and demonstrates expertise and knowledge of products, patient treatment trends, clinical trials, and scientific activities within disease areas of interest.

MAJOR DUTIES OF POSITION:
The Field Medical Advisor (FMA) will be responsible for facilitating and developing relationships with the Canadian medical/scientific community by communicating product and disease state information to health care professionals (HCPs). Become an integral part of national and regional research networks by proactively bringing key scientific thinkers together for the advancement of ideas, and by contributing to external scientific discourse in various venues.

Enhance the reputation of Santen as a science driven company by providing customers with up to date, unbiased scientific information on products and disease states of interest to Santen Canada.

Help formulate and execute KOL Engagement plans and data dissemination and insights collection plans.

Align and execute field activities in support of Global Medical Affairs Strategic plan.

Conduct CME and other scientific exchanges that aim to enhance KOL understanding of unmet clinical needs.

Supporting and collaborating with cross functional teams to provide medical insights and expertise while retaining functional alignment with Global Medical Strategy.

Provide scientific input to GMA planning, including trial design, analysis of proposed trials and as it relates to the Canadian market.

Provide scientific input and analysis of BD opportunities for Canada.

Have and maintain topical scientific expertise in order to contribute to the formation of FMA toolkits, SRLs and other scientific materials to meet the specific needs of the Canada environment.

Provide medical support for market access activities, including meeting and presenting to private and public payers and HTA bodies.

Provide Canadian input into and support late phase research evidence generating activities including company-sponsored phase 4 and HEOR studies

Support congress activities and other KOL facing activities.

Responsible for customization of the annual brand GMA strategy to the Canadian market and its implementation in Canada.

Act as the lead medical representative on Canadian brand teams.

Set objectives, track and measure progress of plans and budgets for Canadian medical plans.

Ensure Canadian needs are effectively communicated to global partners to ensure alignment on strategy and planning at all levels.

Collaborate in the successful management of safety and quality issues by contributing content and strategy in regulatory responses and interactions, risk management planning and implementation for Canada including to collaborate on the root cause analysis and preparation of a CAPA for audit/inspection findings.

Assist Head of Canada in ensuring for appropriate medical resourcing (headcount and budget) and long term planning.

Support regulatory submissions to Health Canada for pharma, device and OTC products.

Follow up on Medical Information requests specific to Canada in alignment with Global Medical Information.

Review and approval of medical and marketing materials and activities in line with national regulations and Santen Canada policies and procedures.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
Advanced degree required: MD, PhD, or PharmD; strong Life sciences education required.

Minimum of 8-10 years of relevant pharmaceutical industry experience, with 5 years previous experience as Medical Science Liaison/Advisor.

Familiarity with the ophthalmic community strongly preferred.

Fluency in French and English required.

Candidate must hold a valid drivers’ license.

Willingness and ability to travel domestically – approx. 50% of time.

Willingness and ability to travel internationally as needed.

Must have experience in launching new products, market shaping and launch readiness activities and product lifecycle management.

Experience working within a matric organization.

Proven track record of success in the area of KOL engagement and experience working with academic centers of excellence.

Experience serving on or chairing review committees is required (Medical Review, IST Review, Grant Review, etc.)

Exemplary interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written, and strong presentation skills.

Demonstrated ability to comprehend complex scientific data and concepts and communicate effectively to a variety of audiences.

Awareness and understanding of regulatory guidelines (Health Canada, IMC, Medtech.)

Strong analytical, conceptual, administrative, and computer skills.

Demonstrated ability to function with minimal supervision and high degree of initiative

Proven track record of being a strong team player and demonstrated ability to effectively interface with other internal departments including marketing, sales, medical affairs and clinical operations.
