Position Summary

Centennial College’s School of Transportation is looking for an engaging Professor to teach courses both theory in classrooms and labs within their Truck & Coach & Heavy Equipment, Post-Secondary & Apprenticeship Programs, with emphasis on heavy vehicle engines and fuels, with the ability to teach all subjects. Reporting to the Chair, the successful candidate will support students in achieving their learning objectives through class, lab and apprenticeship placements to reach their Diploma/Certificate program goals. The incumbent will also collaborate in program and course development, course modifications, lab maintenance/improvement, program quality assurance/accreditation, applied research initiatives, community outreach and on-going future program needs.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Truck and Coach/Heavy Duty curriculum for all 3 levels of apprenticeship learning; ability to teach multiple subjects, with specialization in Engines, Fuels and Electrical
  • Supports Engines/Fuels Lab Leads in maintaining the labs to create a quality learning environment
  • Communicate and interact effectively with all students, faculty, staff at levels, external partners and community members
  • Promote a respectful, team based and supportive work environment based on the principles of inclusion, equity and diversity
  • Create a positive and engaging learning environment for all in person and virtual learning settings
  • Use a variety of appropriate teaching/learning strategies
  • Use academic technology effectively to enhance and support learning both in person and online
  • Evaluate student achievement of learning outcomes using a variety of techniques
  • Develop, revise and adapt appropriate learning resources for students
  • Collaborate with other faculty to enhance student learning opportunities and methods
  • Critically examine learning materials and classroom instructional practice for discriminatory bias or barriers
  • Provide academic support to students as part of regularly scheduled office hours
  • Contribute as a subject matter expert to support curriculum development and revision, especially engines
  • Maintain contacts with relevant industry and professional associations, to stay update on industry trends
  • Remain current in technical knowledge and instructional delivery techniques
  • Attends meetings, maintains records of student grades/assessments, and participates in meetings and activities pertinent to faculty responsibilities

**Note: Due to program expansion and year-round program delivery, this position may have teaching assigned through the summer and on Saturdays. Vacation would be then taken at other times of the year.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Truck & Coach or Heavy Equipment Technician Certificate (310T or 421A) in good standing required; Automotive Service Technician Certificate (310S) is an asset
  • Minimum of eight (8) years progressive, current and relevant experience as a Truck & Coach or Heavy Equipment Technician with extensive experience in engines, fuel and electrical systems, advanced diagnosis and repair on heavy equipment and truck diesel engines
  • Currently registered (or completed) in the Teaching & Learning in Higher Education program, or equivalent training and/or experience in a trades-training context
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver on-line classes in both asynchronous & synchronous modalities
  • Embraces, respects and is committed to the principles and practices of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace
  • Ability to effectively manage a classroom and lab in person and virtual learning settings
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly articulate expectations for students regarding learning outcomes and the evaluation techniques to be used
  • Experience in course or learning materials development preferred
  • Proven communication (written/oral) and interpersonal skills
  • Flexible and adaptable to change; able to pivot instruction to ensure successful student learning outcomes
  • Strong team player with demonstrated collaboration with faculty, support staff and management
