Duties

Provide ongoing student support while working in ever-changing, dynamic programs. Play an active role on numerous teams within Academic and Career Preparation and Vancouver Island University. Stay abreast of factors that may impact students and assist in creating solutions to changing conditions. Maintain close relationships with VIU faculty and staff, as well as relevant partners. Provide student support from first contact through transition to post-secondary or employment. Respond to and manage a large volume of emails. Stay abreast of and respond to issues through multiple forms of ongoing communication. This includes facilitation of ABE Information Sessions, assessment/placement procedures, intake interviews, course and career planning, and personal coaching. Oversee British Columbia Adult Graduation Diploma application process. Provide general support, advocate and offer conflict resolution and referral to appropriate agencies and internal departments for students. Work closely with Aboriginal Student Transition Advisor and Chairs to ensure retention and transition of Indigenous students. Liaise closely with Student Affairs and Mentorship programs.

Required Qualifications

Master’s Degree in relevant field from an appropriately accredited institution; proven advising skills; familiarity with and demonstrated skills in teaching adults in developmental programs; knowledge of learning disabilities, learning challenges, study skill strategies and approaches which can enhance student success; high level of interpersonal skills; familiarity with VIU programs and procedures; recent experience with assessment procedures; sensitivity to the needs of a wide variety of adult students returning to education; ability to work effectively as part of a team comprised of instructors and support staff; and demonstrated ability and recent experience in handling the above-listed duties.

Preferred Qualifications

Teacher training in a relevant field. Teacher training in a relevant area; teaching/tutoring experience; or background in counselling or career coaching.
