JOB SUMMARY
The Postdoc will support professor Peter Berman and a team of faculty members in a CIHR funded research project titled: Upstream determinants of effective COVID-19 response: tools development and application through a case study in British Columbia. The project aims to explore the institutional, organizational, governance, and political factors that influenced the British Columbia public health response to COVID-19. The Associate’s tasks will mainly focus on data collection, quantitative and qualitative analysis, synthesis and publication.
ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS
This project operates out of the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH), Faculty of Medicine, at the Vancouver Campus of the University of British Columbia. The Postdoc will report to Professor Berman and the senior team members, and will collaborate with the Berman Lab Research Manager and the Research Coordinator.
Housed within the Faculty of Medicine, the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH) is an innovative unit that encompasses many of the health-related groupings at UBC as a collaborative venture. The School is structured around four divisions: Occupational and Environmental Health; Health Services and Policy; Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Public Health Practice; and Health in Populations. The resulting mix of professions and disciplines is seen as a means of connecting individuals and learners to galvanize the relationship between health research, public health and health services and to enhance learning.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Postdoc will perform the following duties:
Perform quantitative and qualitative (interviews) data collection and analysis using statistical software (e.g. STATA) and NVivo, respectively.
Synthesize findings and publish academic articles and reports in collaboration with the team.
Prepare abstracts, graphical and textual summaries, and other communications materials and present research findings at conferences and meetings.
Maintain bibliographies of references in appropriate academic formats.
Responsibly manage confidential data in keeping with BREB approval.
Contribute to future funding proposals.
Contribute to team meetings and discussions, and perform other duties, as needed.
CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR
This position exercises professional judgment and initiative in determining work methods for assignments. The incumbent is accountable for the efficient completion of tasks. Errors made could delay the timely completion of work, and thus compromise the results of the project. This would impact the credibility of the PI and other research team investigators. The ability to exercise good judgement while navigating both the academic milieu and concurrently engaging with international and external partners, and other research team members is a requirement.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
The Postdoc works independently, reports primarily to Professor Berman and receives direction from the senior team members. As well, the associate works closely with the Berman Lab Research Manager, Research Coordinator, and Research Assistant(s).
