Academic Hematopathologist

Position Overview

Eastern Ontario Regional Laboratory Association (EORLA) and the University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

We are seeking an academic hematopathologist to join our team providing transfusion medicine (TM) and hematopathology (HP) services including coagulation testing, bone marrow examinations, flow cytometry, hemoglobinopathies and routine/special lab hematology.

A major client of EORLA, the Ottawa Hospital (TOH) is a quaternary academic health sciences centre with one of the largest leukemia programs in Canada treating 60-80 new patients with acute leukemia and performing over 200 bone marrow transplants per year. The program is helping Ontario build capacity for CAR T-cell therapy for ALL and lymphoma patients. TOH’s benign hematology program produces world-leading research in thrombosis. We operate the department’s state-of-the-art molecular oncology diagnostic laboratory which includes NGS platforms for assessing solid and hematologic malignancies in support of precision medicine and clinical trials.

The successful candidate will contribute to all areas of HP-TM service work including on-call and regional consultation duties. Expertise or a demonstrable interest in hemostasis/thrombosis is an asset.

The successful candidate will have academic appointment at UO and participate in teaching and research. Rank will be commensurate with experience according to university guidelines. Salary and benefits accord with Uniform Minimum Level of Compensation for pathologists in Ontario. The position is available immediately and the competition will remain open until it is filled. Basic Requirements

Candidates must be eligible for licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) and must have, or be eligible to obtain, certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or acceptable equivalent) in Hematological Pathology. CPSO pathway 3 or 4 candidates from the US will be considered.

As a pre-condition of employment, all new EORLA employees will be required to obtain and provide a satisfactory Criminal Records Check dated within six (6) months from the date of issue.

About EORLA:
EORLA operates 18 regional hospital-based licensed clinical laboratories across the Champlain Local Health Integration Network (CLHIN) of Eastern Ontario including the Ottawa Hospital and the Children Hospital of Eastern Ontario. The laboratory staff includes over 725 Medical Laboratory Professionals, 70 Medical/Scientific staff and 15 Pathology Residents.

The Division of Anatomical Pathology Reference Laboratory at the Ottawa Hospital processes more than 75,000 surgical pathology specimens and 20,000 cytology specimens per year. The Division operates a subspecialty-based practice with a high proportion of GI, Gyne and Breast cases. The Division has a state-of-the-art molecular oncology diagnostic laboratory which includes next generation sequencing technology and other platforms to support precision medicine and clinical trials.
