Responsibilities:
Assist to verify and improve the existing designs with the aim to make a final choice of a new storage ring lattice for the Conceptual Design Report. This will be achieved through extensive beam optics calculations to enhance brilliance and transverse coherence. As well, dynamic aperture will be optimized for beam lifetime and possible off-axis injection. Further, beam dynamics calculations are required to evaluate the performance of possible RF cavities w.r.t. emittance growth, couple bunch modes and other instabilities.
Conduct experiments independently, analyze data, prepare research papers for publication, present findings at workshops and conferences.
Document methods such that results can be easily reproduced
May visit other light sources and accelerator laboratories that collaborate with the CLS – for example MAX IV, CERN and TRIUMF – for short terms for reporting and conducting laboratory experiments, subject to the need of work and the available funding.
Participate in the University of Saskatchewan Department of Physics and Engineering Physics Sub-atomic Physics Group studying electron accelerators for future light sources.
Qualifications:
Ph.D. degree within the last 2-3 years or expected to receive degree in Physics or Engineering Physics in the near future.
Experience working with particle accelerators, analyzing experimental data from accelerators, as well as computer modelling of electromagnetic devices for particle accelerators.
Good publication record
Prior experience running experiments on accelerators with synchrotron light source related linac and storage ring machines is preferred.
Ability to communicate results, independence and self-motivation
Additional Information:
Working flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, is a requirement of the position.
Occasional travel required.
Registration with the College of Graduate Studies & Research is required. The stipend for the PDF falls within the guidelines set by the University of Saskatchewan (https://cgps.usask.ca/index.php).
This is a one-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal for further two years based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
