VIU is seeking a clinical instructor in the Health Care Assistant Program to deliver instruction on Salt Spring Island. This is in support of the HCA Partnership Pathways initiative.

Support faculty and students to achieve the vision and goals of both the Health Care Assistant Program and VIU. Focus student learning on gaining knowledge, skills, and abilities to effectively care for people experiencing changes in their functional abilities. Enhance the students’ ability to provide cultural safety and person centered care to all.

Teach in clinical setting using creative strategies including preparation, implementation and evaluation in clinical settings. Support student learning through the integration and evaluation of students’ progress in practice. Use initiative in providing documentation and follow up to facilitate student learning.

Candidates with the minimal qualification (LPN Diploma and 5 years’ experience) will be restricted to teaching the following courses: HCAS 107, HCAS 121, and HCAS 131.

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning, and student success. Successful candidates will participate in activities outside the classroom including student support and department committees.

Qualifications:

Completed LPN Diploma and current practicing membership in good standing with the BCCNM; a minimum of five years recent experience in complex care or community settings; familiarity with residential, extended, and home care practice settings in Central Vancouver Island; a solid understanding of the scope and role of HCAs in the health care system; and knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture and ways of knowing.

Must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an appropriately accredited institution. Provincial Instructor’s Diploma, completed or in progress, from an appropriately accredited institution. 3-5 years post-secondary teaching. Familiarity with learning management systems in an educational setting.

Note:

  • Short-listed candidates must provide original transcripts, or applicable original certifications at time of interview.
  • All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
  • Vancouver Island University embraces the principle of employment equity and encourages applications from women, persons with disabilities, visible minorities, and people of Indigenous descent.

Please note that for the foreseeable future, teaching at VIU will be conducted through alternate delivery methods, including online, face-to-face, blended, or hy-flex. The requirement to conduct teaching through alternate delivery methods may also extend past the immediate semester and possibly for the duration of the appointment. Application to this position acknowledges that it is the responsibility of the instructor to adapt their teaching to these unusual circumstances. Assistance with adapting to these changes will be available from the Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Learning.
