Full/Part Time Term Position: 0.8 to 1.0 FTE (4 or 5 days per week)
Start date: July 1, 2021

The successful applicant will primarily provide instruction to and oversight of students within their Clinical Group focusing on patient treatment and practice management. Will support and mentor 2nd, 3rd and 4th year dental students as they experience the bulk of their clinical education in the IGP clinic. Will collaborate with the following: Associate Dean Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean or Director of DMD Curriculum and Module Coordinators.

Additional teaching and oversight responsibilities include the following:

  • Instructs and assesses patient care activities in the clinic:

1. Supervises student while performing dental treatment
2. Guides students while formulating treatment plans
3. Performs treatment when student intervention is required
4. Assesses students for clinical skills and professionalism

  • Instructs in classrooms, simulation and seminars:

1. Plans and presents lectures
2. Guides students in simulation exercises
3. Runs seminar programing

  • Oversees and evaluates student clinical activities:

1. Meets with student (individually and group) throughout the term.
2. Oversees entire patient pool of their group to ensure all students obtain a full clinical experience.
3. Routinely assigns, allocates, transfers and dismisses patients to optimize the breadth and depth of patient care experiences – often prompted by a student request.

  • Oversees and assists students’ development in patient clinical management including:

1. The implementation of an approved comprehensive treatment plan. May need to assist in Treatment Plan development when a student has received conflicting advice.
2. Ensuring patients are being properly treated and managed by students. If issues arise, Module Coordinators and/or Associate Dean – Clinical Affairs are advised.
3. Follow up on patient complaints of student care

  • Assesses quality of students’ clinical experience by participating in and supporting the Clinic Quality Assurance Program including:

1. Conduct patient and record audits (including Chart Audits)
2. Supports the clinic quality assurance in consultation with the Associate Dean Clinical Affairs
3. Review of entire group’s patient pool – determining where deficiencies in clinical experience exists, patients and experiences that can be transferred amongst the group and when additional patients must be brought into the group to ensure a well-rounded clinical experience for all of the group.

  • Provides instructional oversight in the assigning, allocating, transferring and dismissing of patients for equitable assignment:

1. Overseeing of patient treatment plans to ensure all treatment is provided in a comprehensive manner by students
2. Chart audits- ensuring completeness of records and entry of all treatment by students

  • Handles patient referrals to and from the DMD program through reviewing on-line referrals to ensure the patient has adequate needs for the DMD program and assist in calibration.

  • Provides formative structural feedback to students regarding patient care management:

1. Reviews weekly clinical activity reports
2. Reports any concerns to Module Coordinators noted on discrepancy between grades and comments

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the academic life and teach/supervise learners in the Faculty of Dentistry. He/she will be an innovative clinical teacher who will integrate technologies and new approaches to learning into our curriculum. The successful individual should possess exceptional communication and problem-solving skills, be able to work effectively and contribute within a team environment, and maintain positive working relationships with a variety of stakeholders. Preference will be given to an individual with current and active experience in instructing, coaching and mentoring students in clinical setting and those that operate from a solid understanding of patient care and dental practice.

Applicants must have a DDS/DMD degree and be licensed (or eligible) with the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia. Salary is subject to standards within the Faculty of Dentistry based on clinical teaching and oversight.
