The salary range for this position is:
Recruitment range: $55,317- $ 62,259 starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.
Performance range: starting salary to max of $72,307 is available through annual performance increases.
Job Summary
This position provides academic advising for prospective, newly admitted and current BSW and MSW students in the School of Social Work. Advising is provided to both on campus and distance education students. There are 4 program streams within the BSW; the Standard BSW, the Child Welfare Specialization (CWS), the Indigenous Specialization (INS), and the Indigenous Child Welfare Specialization (INCW). There are 3 program streams within the MSW; the MSW Foundation (MSWF), MSW Advanced (MSWA), and MSW Indigenous Specialization (MSWI).
The Admissions and Academic Support Coordinator actively consults and collaborates with students and reviews academic transcripts to provide information, referrals and advice that will support students’ planning and decision-making as it relates to their degree and life choices. The incumbent responds to a broad range of queries from students, faculty and staff, including in-person, telephone and email communication. The incumbent also evaluates applications to the BSW and MSW programs and is responsible for a large portfolio of related administration.
Job Requirements
This position requires a Graduate Degree, MSW preferred, plus minimum two to three years of social work practice, preferably in a number of different settings, e.g., community based settings, health, child welfare, Indigenous agencies, policy and advocacy. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Knowledge requirements include:
An understanding of UVic, HSD and School of Social Work undergraduate and graduate academic policies, procedures, and regulations;
An understanding of the responsibilities of various UVic departments (e.g. SAFA, Undergraduate Admissions and Records, University Systems, University Health Services);
Must have strong skills in the use of Microsoft Office and experience with databases;
An understanding of field education practices and policies;
knowledge of and commitment to Indigenous, de-colonizing, anti-racism, and anti-oppressive perspectives in Social Work;
Knowledge of, and commitment to decolonial – equity practices;
knowledge and commitment to Black, Indigenous and People of color (BIPOC) scholarship
Competency requirements (some examples include):
Competency from a decolonial, equity and social justice lens;
Strong assessment, advising, planning, and problem solving skills;
Excellent analytical, decolonial and critical thinking skills
Respectful communication skills, both written and verbal
Ability to build and maintain productive working relationships with all departments in SOCW, HSD & UVIC
Provide a safe environment to have communication with students and faculty regarding sensitive and confidential matters
Ability to work effectively across differences
Demonstrated administrative and organizational skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
Ability to work effectively with Black, Indigenous, People of Color, diverse abilities, LGBQTS2+ and with all levels of university personnel
Assets or Preferences:
Knowledge and/or an understanding of University registration systems, online technologies, and distance education tools.
Knowledge of Uvic information systems such as FAST, Banner, AIRS, HSData Advising (database)
