The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto and St. Michael’s Hospital are seeking an academic anesthesiologist to fulfill a strategic role within the Department of Anesthesia at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor. The anticipated start date will be July 1, 2021, or one which is mutually agreed upon.

The successful candidate will provide anesthetic care throughout the hospital programs, including supervision and teaching of students, residents and fellows. On-call services will be provided in rotation. Participation in formal in-house and University teaching programs, as well as hospital administrative duties, will be expected. Academic opportunities for research and teaching are available. Academic time is assigned according to an objective assessment of requirements. The incumbent will have major clinical responsibilities and in addition to their own academic activities, will facilitate the research, teaching and education by others. Teaching may be done concurrently with clinical care and/or in organized educational programs. Strategic needs currently include, among others, cardiovascular anesthesia, and clinical epidemiology research.

St. Michael’s Hospital is part of Unity Health Toronto, which includes Providence, St. Joseph’s and St. Michael’s. St. Michael’s is one of Canada’s leading Academic Health Sciences Centres and is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. Located in downtown Toronto, it provides secondary, tertiary and quaternary care services for Toronto, southern Ontario and beyond. The Hospital is organized in a programmatic fashion with an emphasis on Heart & Vascular Disease, Trauma and Neurosurgery, Neuromusculoskeletal Disorders, Oncology, and Specialized Services, Inner City Health and Diabetes Comprehensive Care. The Hospital services more than 77,000 patients yearly in our emergency department, 520,000 ambulatory visits and over 25,000 inpatients, with more than 450 inpatient beds and 25 operating rooms. The Department of Anesthesia at St. Michael’s is known for its clinical excellence and dedication to quality improvement, research, and education. A new patient care tower opened in 2020 that includes modernized operating rooms and critical care areas.

The successful candidate must have a medical degree, postgraduate fellowship training, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification in anesthesia, and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. The successful candidate must have proven clinical skills at a high level, evidence of demonstrated excellence in research and/or education and/or quality improvement and a commitment to teaching students, residents, and fellows. Scholarly excellence will be assessed using the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine promotions guidelines.

Compensation for clinical activities and academic rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and within the usual range for an academic anesthetist in the Province of Ontario ($300,000 – 500,000 per annum).
