Senior Traffic Management Technologist (Engineering Assistant 3)

We are currently hiring for a Traffic Management Technologist who will play a key role within our Transportation Division. Reporting to the Traffic Operations Team Lead, the Engineering Assistant 3 is a senior-level position that performs complex technical work related to managing the safe and efficient flow of traffic throughout the city. Surrey has a population of over 580,000 and continues to grow by approximately 1000 per month, leading to a rewarding and challenging transportation career with opportunities for growth within the Division.
Responsibilities
- Develop, design, and review signage and pavement marking plans and programs for all transportation modes
- Perform field inspections, undertake technical assessments, and make recommendations related to signage and pavement marking installation, sightlines, road safety, and traffic operation, in partnership with other City staff
- Assist in the management of projects such as the development of specifications and standard drawings for signage and pavement markings
- Lead and provide mentorship to junior-level Technologists and Coop Students
- Correspond and interact directly with residents regarding traffic-related inquiries or concerns
- Review the design of external Consultants capital and land development projects
- Attend steering and advisory committees on best practices for traffic safety and operations and attend and speak at public meetings
- Lead projects such as the implementation of the new 2018 TAC Pedestrian Crossing Guidelines, continuing to develop our speed reader board program, and developing and implementing new guidelines for signs and markings for cycle tracks
Qualifications
- Completed a two year diploma in Civil Engineering Technology from a recognized institution.
- Five (5) years of engineering experience with a demonstrated record of technical expertise related to traffic management, and supervisory experience in relevant areas of civil engineering and/or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Experience supervising and providing mentorship/guidance
- A valid and unrestricted driver’s license
The successful incumbent will have:
- In-depth knowledge and expertise of best practices in traffic management
- The ability to clearly communicate both orally and in writing with staff and members of the public
- A strong customer-service mindset
- Ability to supervise and provide mentorship, while working effectively with members of the immediate team and stakeholders
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while juggling multiple priorities and projects
