Healthy Campus Coordinator

Reporting to the Director of Student Development, and under direction of the Athletics and Recreation Department Head, the Healthy Campus Coordinator provides wellness outreach and programming for the students of Selkirk College This position is also responsible for building connections between students and wellness resources, promoting health literacy, facilitating opportunities to promote student wellbeing on campuses and in student residences (ex. events, programs, activities, classroom presentations, social media, workshops, community and campus collaborations, student leadership retreats/workshops).

The Healthy Campus Coordinator requires considerable independent judgement and will work from a systems-based approach, good grounding in student development and trauma-based as well as other frameworks to contribute towards improving conditions for health and well-being, including understanding and working within our strategic directions, policies and procedures, external agencies, learning and working environments, services and supports and physical spaces.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Planning, developing, implementing, evaluating, and promoting health initiatives, programs, policies, tools and resources across the Selkirk College community and with external partners by:

Providing credible expert advice, consultation, education and support in the areas of health promotion. This could include health events for students, classroom presentations and supporting faculty in recognizing students in distress and embedding well-being activities into their classrooms and curriculum. Programming such as initiatives such as Pro-Social Bystanders workshops, sexual consent information campaigns, dinner basket conversations, Eat and Art events, Resiliency Workshops, Anti-racism, Equity, diversity and inclusion, and mental health awareness and reducing stigma campaigns.

Leading and/or supporting the assessment of and continuous improvement to the campus conditions that impact well-being, making appropriate referrals and linkages as necessary.

Collaborating with the Chairs and faculty across all Schools and Teaching and Learning, to provide leadership and consultation processes regarding curriculum and health and wellness;

Maintaining current working knowledge of the Selkirk context (e.g., academic and institutional plans and priorities, faculties, departments, student services in order to best align the Healthy Campus Community work the College Strategic Directions and School priority areas; and,

Participating in campus committees to provide Health Promotion expertise and promote a Healthy Campus Community.

Collaborate with Marketing and Communications staff to develop health promotion materials and communications for the campus community. Develops and writes online and print communication materials, tools and resources.

Develops funding proposals and research, collaborates with local and provincial partners and provides leadership in the development of a strategic student health and wellness plan for Selkirk College by:

Developing strategic and operational plans for the health promotion and specific initiatives by providing health promotion expertise and analysis of existing activities or contexts;

Identifying strategic and innovative opportunities for new healthy campus community initiatives and supporting their research, planning and development. (e.g. those that arise from stakeholder engagement);

Researching and writing Health Promotion online resources, articles and background documents to increase awareness of health and well-being and to contribute to knowledge and best practice in the field. Presenting Health Promotion work at relevant conferences, meetings, and workshops. Researching and developing grant proposals for the Director’s submission;

Analyzing and Evaluating student wellness programs and liaise with the Registrar’s Office, Recreation and Athletics Coordinator, and Student Access and Support Department on issues, successes and insights into the Selkirk Student experience; and,

Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Strong leadership and group facilitation skills and an ability to mentor and teach students/staff

Expertise in health and wellness including sexual violence issues

Strong verbal and written communication skills

Competency with various software and social media to produce and maintain health promotion materials and marketing

Willingness to work outside of normal office hours on a regular basis

Education and Experience

Master’s degree in related field, such as Health Sciences, Health Promotion, Nursing, Human Services or Social Work or related field.

Preferred 3 years’ experience in a post-secondary environment across all College constituencies in teaching, practicum or other learning along with 3 years experience in health promotion

Experience in program planning, implementation and evaluation

Experience with various forms of social media, web-first/COPE strategies and experience in maintaining a blog

Experience and expertise with innovative approaches in health education programming and student engagement

Experience using active learning techniques to engage groups, facilitate workshops/presentation and events, and advise students and staff.

Experience in proposal development that meets funding requirements and financial reporting criteria

Experience and expertise in conducting and analyzing research

Experience in working effectively with international, racialized/ethnic minorities, indigenous, LGBTQ+ and people with disabilities.

This is a regular, full-time position commencing approximately May 31, 2021. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Selkirk College Faculty Association Collective Agreement, Schedule A. The salary range is $2,369.08 – $3,806.85 bi-weekly (at 100% appointment) and is based on qualifications and experience.
