Student Librarian – District of West Vancouver

Student Librarian (Librarian Assistant III)

(Temporary, Full-Time – REVISED)

Located on the traditional, ancestral and unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, West Vancouver is a vibrant community on the North Shore and home to parks, beaches, and to sports, recreation and arts amenities. We are seeking employees with a passion for public service who share our commitment to creating a complete, inclusive and livable community. Our dedicated staff deliver services, operate facilities and run the programs that enhance the well-being of our community.

The West Vancouver Memorial Library has an opening for a Student Librarian to work on two teams: Digital Experience (Technology) and Youth. This is an exciting opportunity for someone passionate about public libraries to work with both kids and adults, with a focus on seniors.

Both departments are driven, inspired, and known throughout the province for innovation, responsiveness, and leadership. Reporting to the Library Services Coordinator – duties will include, but are not limited to (with assistance from a Librarian):

  • Assisting patrons with new technologies to meet a variety of information needs at the Community Computing Centre (CCC) public service desk
  • Assisting kids and families with reader’s advisory and reference at the Youth Department public service desk
  • Programming with an emphasis on middle years (ages 9-12) and adult technology classes. Currently all programs are being planned for the virtual environment.

As much as possible, we try to align programs and projects with our Student Librarian’s areas of interest and passion, while also providing new experiences and opportunities to grow their resume.

Candidates should be enrolled in SLAIS: the iSchool at UBC or an equivalent program at another educational institution, in their second year of study and pursuing a MLIS degree. Essential requirements are:

  • a passion for customer service and connecting people with online library resources and programs
  • a strong interest in or previous experience with mobile technology, apps and instructional design
  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • experience or interest/comfort working with both kids and seniors
  • experience with accessing and downloading digital content (ex: e-books, e-audiobooks)
  • the ability to work well as part of a team
  • previous experience with Zoom (knowledge of advanced features would be an asset)

We anticipate that the majority of this work will be done on-site at the Library (including the facilitation of virtual programs via Zoom). The Library has a robust safety plan and will provide training on COVID procedures.

The preferred candidate will be available for the following potential schedule:

  • September – December: five days/week, days and hours TBD; 420 hours total

The successful candidate will be required to supply an acceptable police information check.
