The Role:
Urban Planning and Local Economy is a forward-looking department that plans, promotes and advocates change that moves this city towards the Edmonton envisioned by the citizens we serve. The work of this department concentrates on planning and executing for the development needs of today and the future.
Reporting to the Branch Manager, Economic Investment Services, the Director, Local Economy and Investment Services will lead the City of Edmonton’s business retention and expansion, small business supports and local economic development grant programs. The Director plans, organizes, leads and oversees the work of local economic development activities in alignment with the overall branch, department and corporate direction as well as with the City’s external economic development partners including Edmonton Global and Innovate Edmonton. Critical to this work is exceptional customer service to the business community.
First year goals and deliverables:
Ensure front line services and operations are delivered in a way that aligns with corporate strategy and the direction of Council
Implement the Economic Action Plan and Economic Development Policy included in City Plan
Contribute to existing and build new partnerships with external agencies, orders of government, community organizations, and internal departments and branches
Anticipate business opportunities, contribute to policy, planning and initiatives, and foster a culture of accountability through performance measurement
Integrate multi-disciplinary teams to work collaboratively with stakeholders supporting corporate priorities
Respond with agility to the emerging needs of the business community
Qualifications :
What does success look like?
Utilize your education and/or training in Business Administration, Finance, Public Administration, Urban Planning or similar fields
Utilize current or past experience in senior leadership roles within large, complex organizations and/or experience as an entrepreneur
Integrate multi-disciplinary teams to work collaboratively with stakeholders supporting corporate priorities
Think strategically to address large, complex issues, to manage emergent projects while steering dynamically
Demonstrate service excellence through innovative, responsive, proactive and timely customer service
Build a respectful workplace culture through a values-based influencer approach and work collaboratively
Balance strategic planning with executive level consulting and communication skills
Understand complex municipal subject matter and build influential relationships with Council, external agencies, orders of government, community organizations, and internal departments and branches
Communicate with strong political acumen, strategic planning, issue resolution and decision-making skills
Present complex ideas to diverse audiences, build positive relationships and establish clear expectations
Align leadership, organizational climate and resources to support the corporation’s strategic management framework
