Description
The Financial Accountant is responsible for the maintenance, and validity of The Salvation Army’s general ledgers, and associated sub-ledgers. They will prepare and process complex reconciliations and prepare major journal entries (both one-time and recurring in support of these functions. The Financial Accountant will be the prime person responsible for a designated set of ministry unit and client financial statements and be the prime contact for clients in the understanding and resolution of financial statement issues. Where applicable, identify and recommend process improvement and document processes within their area of responsibility.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- General Ledger maintenance and validity and related financial and analytical functions:
- Complete significant account reconciliations on various general ledger and sub-ledger accounts.
- Research and/or prepare various analytical and financial reports
- On a regular basis review unit financial statements for accuracy, and financial health (i.e. Cash flow, fund balances, budgetary performance, etc.)
- Prepare various accruals as required
- Initiate bank transfers for both incoming and outgoing funds.
- Complete daily bank reconciliations.
- Ensure transactions are supported by authorizations that are obtained, entered and recorded prior to the release of documents.
- Ensure invoices are appropriately established as accruals or pre-paids in line with accepted policy.
- Ensure transactions are supported by adequate supporting documentation, in accordance with official policy and properly approved.
- Initiate all transactions by due date
- Ensure transactions are reflected in the proper accounting period
- Assists with year-end processes.
- Manage partnership with ministry units and external clients:
- Act as the designated client contact and follow up with clients concerning outstanding issues related to financial statement and accounting processes
- Remain fluent with and understand Salvation Army policies to ensure accounting transactions are in line with policy and procedure.
- Initiate and maintain ongoing communications with clients, treating them with respect and courtesy at all times. Develop an understanding of client requirements, providing detailed solutions and explanations to queries.
- Complete and discuss budget variance analysis reports with partners.
- Assist in the budget preparation process on behalf of ministry units and THQ/DHQ departments.
- Report to the Senior Financial Accountant any concerns regarding the accounting and financial health of ministry units.
- Manages deductions and government reporting:
- Ensure tax rebates are claimed appropriately basis.
- Complete Charitable Filings with the Canada Revenue Agency including T3010 filings.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Education/Certifications:
- Bachelor Degree in Finance/ Accounting stream.
Experience:
- The FA must have at least three years of experience in an accounting/finance environment.
Required Skills/Knowledge:
- Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
- High quality Excel spreadsheet skills for handling large volumes of data (function knowledge specific to VLookups and index/match, indirect, trims, left, right, mid, substitute, if statements [with or/and logic])
- Excellent knowledge of Word
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent customer service skills are a must.
