Description
There are 2 contract full-time positions offering hours 40 hours per week for 7 weeks. Schedule will vary according to requirements and responsibilities – overnight and weekend work may be required. Shifts include a ½ hour paid meal break where applicable. Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule. Shifts can include the following: afternoons, overnights and weekends.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in promoting an environment that is both supportive and nurturing by being involved in the planning of the Individualized Support Plans in conjunction with the STRIVE team members, other staff, professionals and families as required.
- Assist the participants in meeting their emotional and psychological needs by participating in the planning of the treatment/rehabilitation plans in conjunction with participants, team members, other staff and professionals.
- Review and have a working knowledge of the treatment procedures for each individual participant in your specific program.
- Assist in supporting the efforts made to meet participants’ spiritual needs by way of a demonstrated interest and participation in programming activities where necessary.
- Work co-operatively with day program staff and when necessary residential team members in providing coordinated and consistent approaches to participant care.
- Ensure the proper and accurate recording of all daily logs, shift reports, incident reports, etc.
- Assist with the transport of clients to and from specific destinations, using program vehicles, when necessary.
- Perform other position related duties as assigned

- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures. Reporting any issues or concerns to your Health & Safety representative or the Joint Health & Safety Committee.
- Endeavour to develop appropriate and therapeutic relationships with participants, exhibiting role model behaviour at all times.
- Demonstrate understanding of agency policy, procedures and philosophy.
- Participate in supervision and performance appraisal process.
- Participate in mandatory training as required.
- Function as a responsible member of the team by attitude, confidentiality, reliability and performance.
- Responsible to maintain professional integrity and honesty in the workplace and to report any observed infractions of the policy manual to either the Program Manager or the Executive Director.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Completed a minimum of one (1) year of post-secondary education in the Human Services Field or equivalent
- A minimum of 3 months of experience working with adults with developmental disabilities and vulnerable populations preferable in a residential or day program setting.
- Computer experience with electronic scheduling and MS Office.
- Required to have a valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license, and provide an original copy of driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
- An understanding of the psychological and social dynamics of working with developmentally and behaviourally challenged individuals.
- Must have valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s license and a current original copy of Driver’s Abstract.
- Current First Aid & Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation with Defibrillation training and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification is required. (must be verified with copy of certificate).
- Pharmacology training and experience in medication administration an asset.
- Lift and transfer training and experience an asset.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Self-motivated and disciplined.
- Provide an original copy of a Criminal Background Check with vulnerable sector screening
- Demonstrate an understanding of the psychological and social dynamics of working with developmental and behaviourally challenged individuals.
- Support for and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.
This position is funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:
- a post-secondary student, between 18 and 30 years of age at the start of the program
- have been registered as full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and,
- be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
