Research Assistant (Bioremediation)

Reporting to Dr. Sujeenthar Tharmalingam (Assistant Professor of Molecular Biology), this position will support various research activities. Observes and records results. May be responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of the research laboratory and may perform related administrative duties.

This position is covered by the Terms and Conditions of the OPSEU Staff Unit 677 Collective Agreement. A copy is available on the NOSM website.

Responsibilities

Tasks may include but are not limited to the following:
Coordinates and conducts varied or more complex quantitative research experiments in support of Bioremediation Project by interpreting, recording and/or coding data or observations, and identifying and conducting sample tests using more complex techniques;

Participates in the development and design of research methodology;

Prepare equipment, solutions, and materials for use in the laboratory;

Gathers, compiles, interprets, analyzes and presents data for reports;

Participate in the preparation of ethics documents;

Use multiple software applications including word processing, databases, quantitative research software, etc.;

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

A University degree in Biology, or relevant discipline (e.g. Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Health Sciences, etc.) from a recognized university with Canadian accreditation or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Graduate degree in this field is considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Minimum of 3 years of related experience is required;

Previous laboratory experience is required;

Experience using quantitative research software;

Experience in growing mammalian cells, performing molecular biology experiments, lentivirus transformation and application of CRISPR technologies.

Effectively and accurately communicate technical information in writing;

Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical skills;

Interpret, analyze, input and maintain data records with a high degree of accuracy;

Knowledge of related scientific theory and practices;

Makes routine decisions based on guidelines;

Work effectively under time pressures;

Work effectively in a team environment;

Work within established organizational practices, protocols, and policies.

Language

Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)

French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset.
