Reporting to the Director, Academic Advising, the Associate Director oversees and advances the delivery of holistic, integrated advising. The Associate Director is responsible for day-to-day management of the UFV Advising Centre, ensuring an inclusive, supportive and rewarding work environment.
Ensures quality advising practices for the support of all academic programs
Remains current in the range of services and supports available to students at UFV
Collaborates within and beyond the VPS portfolio to identify and address student needs and to promote student success
Collaborates with the Centre for Experiential and Career Education to foster a strong connection between academic advising and student career goals
Engages faculty, as relevant, to support student advising initiatives
Determines the special advising needs of sub-populations of students and works with the Academic Advising team to develop programming and strategies to support these students
Ensures advising practices meet the Council for the Advancement of Standards (CAS) in Higher Education: Advising Standards
Works with the Director to set goals and plans for Academic Advising, which include advancing the goals of UFV’s Integrated Strategic Plan and fulfilling UFV’s commitments to equity, diversity, inclusion, and Indigenization, as relevant to the portfolio
Manages the day-to-day management of the UFV Advising Centre, ensuring an inclusive, supportive, and rewarding work environment
Provides direct supervision, coaching and mentoring to Academic Advisors
Provides ongoing training and orientation of Advisors to policies and procedures of the Advising Centre
Fosters a strong, student-centred, holistic-service among advisors
Directs the review of advising procedures relevant to retention practices, admissions, transfer and articulation, student records, and graduation, ensuring the implementation of needed updates and changes
Works with the Program Assistant to identify Advising Centre efficiencies and new technology that can enhance and improve the work of Advisors
Provides assistance to Advisors with students in complex or challenging situations
Represents the Advising Centre on UFV committees or task forces, as assigned by the Director
Engages in collaborative projects with others in the institution, as assigned by the Director
Provides advice on academic programs, policies, and proposals as relevant to the position
Engages in professional development activities; keeps up to date with emerging trends and new developments by maintaining membership in the Global Community for Academic Advising Association (NACADA) and other related professional groups
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution required. Masters’ degree from a recognized institution preferred
Minimum five (5) years’ experience in student academic advising in a post-secondary environment.
A minimum of (2) years of leadership experience
Demonstrated collaborative, inclusive, relational approach to working with others
Demonstrated strength in written and oral communication, including attention to the audience
Experience in report writing
Experience in the development and delivery of presentations
Evidence of strong interpersonal skills, including teambuilding
Evidence of ongoing professional development relevant to the position
Demonstrated knowledge of the needs of students, including subpopulations within
Evidence of a strong commitment to the ethical and professional standards of providing service to students
