ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking a passionate Inclusive Education Teacher who is organized and looking for an enriching experience to be part of the school team. The Inclusive Education Teacher will be responsible for teaching groups of students with mild or moderate disabilities. You will modify existing curriculum on basic subjects to meet each student’s learning needs and build individual lesson plans tailored to their specific needs. Ultimately, you will be the leader of inclusive education at the Elsie Fabian School. This is a full-time position reporting directly to the Principal of Elsie Fabian School.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assess students’ skills, abilities and learning requirements
  • Design individualized educational Plans (IEPs)
  • Collaborate with parents and school staff to track students’ progress 
  • Adapt learning materials to students’ needs and keep track of and reflect on progress 
  • Monitor Students behavioral patterns and arrange appropriate interventions if needed
  • Find engaging activities to teach skills (e.g. drawing and theater drama)
  • Classroom management and resolve conflict
  • Prepare students for transition to the next grade
  • Inform parents about their children’s performance
  • Coach and mentor other professionals who work with children with disabilities
  • Collaborate with the support staff (e.g. school counsellors and speech therapists) to create holistic intervention plans.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum Bachelor of Education – Special Education Specialist 
  • Alberta Teacher’s Certificate
  • Proven experience as a Special Education Teacher or relevant role
  • Good knowledge of current special education topics and methodologies
  • Experience working with children with a wide range of disabilities
  • Extensive Experience working in a First Nations community including knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions and values is considered an asset
  • Ability to speak, read and write Cree and/or Dene considered an asset
  • Clean Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector required
  • Valid class 5 Driver’s License & Clean Driver’s Abstract required
  • Successful candidate will be required to live in (or relocate to) Fort McMurray, Alberta

ABOUT THE SCHOOL

The Elsie Fabian School opened its doors September of 2022. The school has incorporated both the Dene and Cree Language, culture, and Land-Based Education where students learn about their rich local history. ABOUT FORT MCKAY

The Fort McKay First Nation (FMFN) is composed of over 900 band members, including those of Cree and Dene heritage, with approximately 500 members residing in the hamlet of Fort McKay — a community located approximately 65 km north of Fort McMurray.
