Reporting to the Chair and under the supervision of the Department Manager, this role has full managerial authority related to human resource management including organizational design, assignment of work, as well as the hiring, performance management, and professional development of Laboratory staff in the Department of Chemical and Physical Sciences (CPS). 

The incumbent will be responsible for financial management, under department manager’s supervision, of the Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics, and Astronomy Undergraduate Teaching Laboratories (UTLs) and Core Instrument Facility (CIF), which includes the preparation of annual budgets, managing ancillary fees, researching and purchasing chemicals, supplies, and equipment, as well as reconciling and authorizing purchases of materials, parts, supplies and managing field work budgets. In addition, and with a high level of autonomy, the incumbent is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the CPS UTLs and CIF, along with co-managing laboratory time-tabling in consultation with the Associate Chair: Teaching and the Undergraduate Program Administrator. 

The incumbent is expected to exercise a high degree of creativity, judgment and initiative in creating strategies and solutions. The incumbent is also required to have a strong understanding of the internal workings and policies of the University to effectively manage Laboratory staff and support the academic administrators, faculty, staff and students, as well as to ensure that administrative practices are in compliance with Collective Agreements, University and Legislated policies and regulations.

Minimum Qualifications

I. EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry, or Biology. Preference will be given to applicants with a Postgraduate degree in sciences.

II. EXPERIENCE: Minimum five (5) years of relevant experience in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Biology laboratories including at least two (2) years’ experience with managing staff in unionized environments and operating a facility with chemical hazards. At least one year of direct experience with the University Guide to Financial Management and University Procurement Policy is essential. Experience in managing various budgets is a must (e.g. headcount, teaching and research equipment, laboratory supplies, long and short-term projects, field trip budgets). A thorough knowledge of general science at the introductory undergraduate level is required, as is laboratory experience. Experience coordinating laboratories at the university level, use of course management software (e.g., Canvas/Quercus), and experience interacting with undergraduate students are strong assets. A good working knowledge of fiscal, human resources and environmental health and safety policies and procedures is a requirement of this position.

III. SKILLS: Must have excellent analytical skills (an aptitude for figures); excellent computer skills, including Excel, Word. Excellent communication (both oral and written) and organizational skills. Excellent decision- making and interpersonal skills.

IV. OTHER: Ability to organize, coordinate and effectively communicate activities as they relate to staff, faculty, and students. Experience in laboratory management. Experience managing a laboratory operation, procurement, safe storage and disposal of hazardous chemicals, equipment, and supplies, and managing an online database inventory system. Qualification as a First Aid responder is an asset (First Aid training will be provided). WHMIS & Chemical Safety training or be willing to be trained.

Normal working hours: Monday to Friday, 8:45am to 5:00pm. Work extended hours as a result of strict deadlines (e.g., month-end reporting, project deliverables, etc.), which may include weekends, evenings, and/or holidays.
