The Physics Department at the University of Rhode Island (URI) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position of an Assistant Professor of Physics beginning in the fall of 2025 (time of appointment August 2025), specifically for a theorist, data analyst, or computational physicist working in the field of astrophysics. The Department has recently established a strong research group in gravitational wave astrophysics and built deep collaborations in the region. URI is a member of LIGO Scientific Collaboration, and the Cosmic Explorer and LISA Consortiums, with significant ties to the NRAO and VLA.

Considerations will be given to applicants who can show expertise and creative ideas for their role as researcher, mentor, and teacher in the physics program. We seek an expert with a strong record of research in astrophysics. The ideal candidate will also seek to build collaborations, as appropriate, with current astrophysics faculty whose areas of expertise include gravitational wave astrophysics (theory, data analysis, or source modeling), computational relativity, relativistic and multi-messenger astrophysics. Additionally, observing and modeling radio loud quasars and microquasars, radio galaxies and associated AGN, as well as all sky surveys and use of telescopes are areas of interest. Experience in leveraging computational methods, including machine learning and artificial intelligence would be synergistic with other investments at URI and in the region. The Physics Department, College of Arts and Sciences and URI are committed to building and supporting a diverse, inclusive, and equitable community of students and scholars.

Basic Function:

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate physics courses, advise undergraduate and graduate students toward BS, MS, and PhD degrees, conduct independent and collaborative research, with an expectation of external funding, and be active in service at the levels of Department, College, and University. The successful candidate will also seek collaborations in the region and with other researchers at URI including those in Computer Science & Statistics, Mathematics, Graduate School of Oceanography, Engineering and the URI Center for Computational Research.

The University of Rhode Island is the State’s flagship land/sea/space grant research university with an enrollment of approximately 18,000 students. The Physics Department has 20+ full-time faculty/staff members and offers BS, MS and PhD degrees. In addition, URI offers an impressive array of computational facilities including multiple HPC clusters and other resources through the Massachusetts Green HPC Consortium. URI is in Kingston, RI — a beautiful oceanside community that is well connected by car and high-speed rail located about an hour away from Boston and 3 hours from New York City.

Required Qualifications:

1) PhD in Physics or a very closely related field at time of appointment.

2) Postdoctoral or equivalent experience.

3) Record of scholarly achievement (publications, presentations, awards).

4) Demonstrated ability to be an effective teacher of undergraduate and/or graduate physics courses.

5) Demonstrated potential for developing and sustaining an independent, externally funded, research program involving undergraduate and graduate students leading to peer-reviewed publications.

6) Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral communication skills.

7) Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.

Preferred Qualifications:

1) Experience in theoretical or computational astrophysics, gravitational waves, multi-messenger astrophysics, radio astrophysics, x-ray astrophysics, or observing and modeling of AGN.

2) Demonstrated interest and commitment to increasing the participation of underrepresented students in science through teaching and mentoring.

3) Interest in designing an Astrophysics major.
