The Department of Mechanical, Industrial, and Systems Engineering at the University of Rhode Island (URI) invites applications at the Assistant Professor level from outstanding individuals with demonstrated expertise or research potential in the broad area of Thermal Sciences and Energy Systems.

Applicable areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Chemically reactive energy systems
  • Low carbon fuels
  • Carbon storage and sequestration
  • Hydrogen economy
  • Energy storage
  • Thermal radiation and its applications
  • Multi-phase heat transfer
  • Shipboard and undersea vehicle energy systems, power and propulsion
  • Low carbon shipping
  • Generative AI-assisted thermal system simulation or management
  • Nuclear energy

The successful candidate will be expected to establish a nationally and internationally recognized research program and become an international leader in this field. She/He will have earned a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering or related fields.

The University of Rhode Island is nationally recognized for its energy initiatives, including significant contributions to renewable energy, energy storage projects and partnerships across academia, research, industry, and the community.

Required Qualifications:

1. An earned doctorate in Mechanical Engineering or related field at the time of appointment.

2. Demonstrated ability to teach at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, including thermodynamics.

3. Demonstrated record or potential for scholarly achievement evidenced by publications, presentations, or awards in areas related to thermal sciences and energy.

4. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.

5. Demonstrated proficiency in oral communication skills.

6. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Strong expertise augmented by recognized scholarly contributions in Thermal Sciences and Energy.

2. Demonstrated track record in computational and experimental modeling of energy systems.

3. Ability to teach courses in at least one of the following subjects: environmental fluid mechanics, gas dynamics, wave dynamics, or energy topics in addition to developing courses in their area of expertise.

4. Publications in professional journals commensurate with experience.

5. Ability to foster a nurturing and inclusive environment for students, faculty, and staff.
