POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Executive Director, Calgary Campus the International Student Specialist will provide integrated advising services to International Students on the Calgary Campus with the aim of improving student retention/persistence, academic performance, and student experience. They are responsible for providing academic support, program advising, immigration advising, transition programming, and community building. They will provide accurate and detailed information specifically in the areas of international student immigration, health insurance, personal wellbeing, and cultural transition and guidance for all matters pertaining to the International Student experience. This position will also be responsible for providing students, family members and dependents with information and guidance specifically related to Canadian immigration legislation, policies, and procedures. This position will work collaboratively across the institution and will have a secondary reporting relationship to the Manager, International Student Services and will work closely with the International Centre, Student Services and academic units who deliver programming on the Calgary Campus.
The international Student Specialist must possess cultural sensitivity; ability to work under pressure; empathy; and strong communication skills.
This is a 3 year – 0.6 FTE Term position, working approx. 21 hours per week.
The successful candidate will need to have availability between 3:00PM and 7:00PM (Mon to Fri) with some daytime availability on Saturdays, between 9:00AM and 2:00PM.
The International Student Specialist will be required to work in person, on the Calgary Campus, starting September 1, 2021 but would be able to work remotely in the interim.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- The design, implementation, coordination, and delivery of transitional programming for international students on the Calgary Campus, including New Student Orientation, ongoing health and wellness activities, convocation, and community-building opportunities.
- Providing confidential support, guidance and advocacy for international students related to mediating institutional roadblocks and cultural unknowns, maintaining lawful immigration status in Canada, and employment rights.
- Provide accurate information to current and prospective students to aid in their program planning, which can include professional goals, course selection, and devising solutions to complex issues that interfere with academic progress.
- Monitor academic progress of international students; and develop and facilitate group sessions for students on topics related to academic success, academic writing, goal setting and decision-making for International students.
- Liaise with the International Centre, the Wellness Centre, Accommodated Learning Centre, and other support services staff to support the development and delivery of integrated International student services.
- Provide confidential support, guidance and advocacy for international students related to navigating University policy and regulations, working to remove roadblocks and enhance student success and experience.
- The International Student Specialist will forge new relationships with community organizations in the Calgary area to enhance the student experience, this may include immigration or settlement organizations, cultural groups, or other community groups.
The hiring range for this 0.6FTE position is $4,119 – $4,662 per month.
Position Qualifications
- An Undergraduate Degree.
- 2-4 years professional experience working with international students or immigration advising in an educational setting, post-secondary experience is preferred.
- Fluency in a language(s) in addition to English would be considered an asset.
- A member in good standing of the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC) as a Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA) is required.
