In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority, patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at VIHA; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
Reporting to the Director, Anaesthesia and Surgical Services, the Manager, Surgical Access is responsible for providing leadership in all aspects of the planning, implementation, delivery and evaluation of surgical scheduling, pre admission and waitlists management and is accountable to the surgical program for effective and efficient utilization of resources to optimize patient access and resource management.
The Manager is responsible for the operational management and integration of the Surgical Patient Registry and related surgical initiatives, OR Booking Systems, and surgical metrics within the Health Authority and related provincial and national repositories.
The Manager is responsible for all aspects of planning, organizing and directing various projects and/or initiatives to ensure the achievement of outcomes identified in the VIHA Strategic Plan specific to Surgical Services.
Ensures fiscal, technological, physical and human resources meet the operational needs of the departments.
Ensures project policies and procedures comply with professional, legal, provincial and VIHA standards.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Training And Experience
A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Baccalaureate degree in nursing, health information or administration with at least seven years relevant experience in the health care field. Relevant experience would include developing and implementing processes to ensure patients are appropriately booked and prepared for surgery, as well as supervisory experience.
Five to seven years clinical experience in a variety of settings. Recent exposure to surgical care and processes Demonstrated knowledge in the current practices of standardization, integration and utilization specific to surgical services.

Computer literacy, particularly with the ability to access and use a variety of information system tools to support the delivery and evaluation of surgical booking and utilization information.
Ability to manage conflicting demands from physicians, hospital departments and patient needs while maintaining a constructive working relationship with all parties.
Ability to set strategic priorities aligned to budget and clinical care standards.
Sound Knowledge of:– Existing systems and processes that support the movement of patients through the acute care system.
Booking and pre-admission systems and processes, in particular for Surgical Services.
Principals of utilization management and quality improvement.
Current issues with respect to patient access.
