The Salvation Army Crossroads requires Residential Workers and individuals interested in making a difference in the Social Work field at our Men’s Emergency Shelter.
Crossroads Centre is dedicated to providing a safe, stable and positive residential setting for men in crisis, respecting cultural and religious diversity. A Residential Worker supports individuals struggling with homelessness in Saskatoon. Motivated by Gods love, The Salvation Army CRS is dedicated to nurturing a safe, compassionate, healthy and respectful community. The Salvation Army is a non-profit organization and one of largest social services providers across Canada. The Men’s Emergency Shelter Program seeks to provide assistance in finding appropriate and permanent housing based on the individuals level of need. The ideal candidate is compassionate, non-judgemental and is able to build appropriate and trusting relationship with residents.
This is a Casual position, with variable shifts including evenings and weekends.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide support to residents and ensure that their emotional, psychological, and physical needs are met, adhering to the policies and procedures of the residence
- Support new trainee staff by demonstrating/explaining policies and procedures and expected tasks for specific shifts
- Ensure that the environment of the program is supportive, nurturing, and encourages a high degree of resident involvement, including decision making
- Be aware of all residents and their activities, and follow through with case plans, expectations, and required programming
- Responsible for ensuring residents can acquire funding in an efficient and timely manner by liaising with Income Assistance or other financial resources
- Prepare and present shift exchange to share information with the next shift and provide consistency in the home for all residents and staff
- Care for residents’ health needs and seek medical attention in a timely manner
- Read and document in necessary logs/files each shift – all documentation should provide objective information including behaviour, attitude, and concerns regarding all activities, events, and meetings
- Ensure quality presentation of meals and snacks as required on shift, while maintaining a high level of cleanliness of the eating and cooking area’s and assisting residents with nutritional needs
- Cleaning and sanitizing, as necessary, and ensuring the safety of the property
- Able to communicate in a clear and concise manner with residents, staff, professionals, and members of the public while maintaining confidentiality, fairness, and respect
- Remain alert and awake at all times throughout all shifts
- Complete EAH (Emergency After Hours) program tasks, as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Education Level Attained: : The successful job applicant will have completed high school, plus specialized courses of up to six (6) months (Addictions Facilities). Preferred certificate, diploma, or degree in related field (ie: Social Work, Psychology, Addictions, or other Humanities) NOTE: An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable.
The incumbent must have the following experience before hire: More than one year but less than three years of prior related experience, including, experience with frontline work in a social services setting.
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in the human services field and/or equivalent experience preferred
- Demonstrate and practice a healthy lifestyle
- Knowledge and awareness of First Nations culture(s) and social justice issues
- Awareness of Trauma Informed Care beneficial
- To be able to develop and sustain professional working relationships with residents, members of the public, other agencies and staff, keeping strict confidentiality and appropriate boundaries
- To be able to communicate effectively in oral and written form
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Office Suite
- Current First Aid/CPR, Drivers Abstract within 6 months and Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector within 6 months
- Ability and willingness to work varying shifts is a must
Precautionary Measures: The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):
- Universal precautions
- Immunization for Hepatitis B
- Vaccination against Tuberculosis
- Current Certification in First Aid/CPR
- Criminal Police Investigation Check (CPIC)
- Non-violent crisis intervention training
PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:
- The performance of the job requires moderate amounts of keyboarding, and performing walk abouts
- The performance of the job requires continuously monitoring the environment, monitoring security cameras and attentiveness when interacting with clients and recording information.
