Director, Credit Solutions – Life Science Toronto

In early 2019, SVB Canada was officially launched after being granted a lending license by OSFI and has in two years grown to more than 25 team members with offices in Toronto (HQ) and Vancouver.

The Credit Solutions team at SVB Canada is responsible for the structuring, underwriting, legal negotiation and ongoing management of all lending relationships in the country.

The majority of the team is focused primarily on technology companies. This role would be primarily focused on the Life Science and Healthcare verticals.

As an early member of the team you will:
Own the diligence process for new credit opportunities to venture backed life science and healthcare companies of all sizes in Canada.

Work alongside the Life Science MD to provide debt structures that meet the needs of prospects and existing portfolio companies.

Be responsible for the internal underwriting, credit approval, legal documentation and closing processes.

Be responsible for a portfolio of up to 30 companies including ongoing communication with CFO/CEO and proactive performance/financial/covenant monitoring.

Anticipate portfolio company needs by having an informed perspective on the current market environment and the various ways SVB can help solve capital needs.

With the support of the Life Science MD, contribute to business development and participate in client and industry events as a subject matter expert.

Qualifications

10+ years of experience in commercial lending, private credit, royalty lending, strategic finance, venture capital, or similar roles in financial services.

Bachelor’s degree or you have all the other qualifications/experience.

Significant reps performing diligence and financial modeling to identify credit-worthiness of prospective borrowers.

Strong negotiation skills and ability to independently drive sophisticated negotiations (term sheet, legal, ad-hoc) to completion.

Strong verbal and written communication skills – including the ability to build peer level relationships with CFOs/CEOs independently. Regularly delivers clear, succinct messages to all partners in good and bad situations.

Ability to thrive in a startup like environment within SVB Canada where everyone regularly wears multiple hats.

Nice to have or ability to learn:
Understanding of the full life cycle of a life science startup from benchtop to commercialization

Solid understanding of the venture capital ecosystem

High level understanding of clinical and regulatory pathways for biotech and medical devices

Ability to navigate and interpret a sophisticated cap table with your eyes closed
