The Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer is responsible for planning, implementing and managing all financial-related activities. In addition, the position is the lead for IT and property management.

Salary: Starting at $100 000 (based on experience)

Full time permanent role

Office located in downtown Toronto near the Bloor / Yonge subway station. Occasional opportunities to work from home anticipated.

As a key member of the Leadership Team of The General Synod of The Anglican Church of Canada, the focus of the Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer (Treasurer & CFO) will guide the overall financial management of the organization. The Treasurer & CFO will have primary responsibility for planning, implementing, and managing all financial-related activities. In addition, this individual will be the lead for IT and property management.

The incumbent will provide institutional leadership in the areas of accounting, finance, payroll, budgeting / forecasting, audits, strategic planning, property, IT, material management and investments. The incumbent will be responsible for creating policies, defining processes, and implementing the infrastructure and systems needed to support the organization’s development.

The successful candidate will be self-disciplined and reliable with demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to deliver innovation and vision. The ability to establish a climate of trust and respect that encourages and promotes effective staff performance is crucial. Skilled at critical thinking, continuous improvement, change management and flexibility, the successful candidate will have conceptual and long-range planning abilities. Knowledge of investment, credit, and financial and management accounting principles as well as an understanding of systems, processes and internal controls are essential. Ethical with a high level of integrity, the Treasurer & CFO will have effective decision-making skills and will ensure fairness and consistency.

Experience, Education and Competencies Required 

  • CPA – CGA or CPA- CMA designation, plus at least six years of directly related experience,
  • Working experience in a complex not-for-profit environment.
  • Supervisory experience of a team with diverse accountabilities.
  • Significant experience working with volunteer boards and committees.
  • An understanding of the ethos and structure of The Anglican Church of Canada would be considered an asset.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Strong organization, project, and time management skills.
  • Competency in the use of Microsoft Office suite and accounting software.
  • Exhibits sound and accurate judgment, supports and explains reasoning for decisions and includes appropriate people in decision-making processes.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; looks for ways to improve and promote quality, applies feedback to improve performance and monitors own work to ensure quality.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, stakeholders and the general public.
  • Delegation skills in the allocation of work assignments, giving authority to work independently, sets expectations and monitors delegated activities.
  • Inspires and motivates others to perform well, exercises tact and judgment in working with others. As the unit leader, includes staff in planning and decision-making, takes responsibility for staff’s activities, provides regular performance feedback.
  • Willing to travel for occasional residential governance meetings.
