Description
Cuthbert House is an Open Custody / Open Detention residential facility for male youth between the ages of 12 -17, who are involved in the criminal justice system. Residential Assistant’s primary job is to provide supervision and maintain the safety and security of the facility and everyone living in it.
Reporting to the Assistant Director, the Residential Assistant Education helps the Education Liaison ensure efficient safe and secure facilitation of school in an open custody / open detention setting. A high level of resident supervision and staff support is required. All responsibilities listed below are done at the direction of the Assistant Director or by management.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with supervision of residents in the school and facility
- Assist with the completion of duties related to school, complete reports and logs
- Communicate and enforce facility rules while maintaining safety
- Follow policies and procedures of Cuthbert House, The Salvation Army and the Ministry of Children & Youth Services
- Assist with comprehensive case management for clients related to education
- Assist in providing guidance and advise to clients
- With direction, assist clients to address their criminogenic issues
- With supervision help clients with interpersonal relationships
- Observe, assess and document resident behavior and ongoing progress in a factual manner to management to assist with case notes
- With direction and as part of the program to learn, appear in court when necessary
- Assist with escort residents in a lawful, safe and expedient manner as required
- Challenge and address criminal conduct and thinking with clients
- Refer clients to outside resources and counseling when needed
- Support the Mission of The Salvation Army and Cuthbert House
- Assist with the support clients in fulfilling their spiritual needs
- Assist with the delivery of group programming when required
- Complete Sundry duties for required housekeeping and maintenance duties in the facility
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:
- be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment*
- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
- have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
- Working towards a degree or diploma in Social Sciences, Child and Youth Care, Correction or Social Services and related experiences
- Knowledge of correctional practices considered an asset
- Excellent communication skills (oral and written) in English, a second language considered an asset
- Able to work in a fast-paced environment
- Able to keep calm in stressful situation
- Able to maintain confidentiality
- Passion and demonstrated ability to work with clients who have complex needs
- Ability to build rapport
- Ability to function within a team or in the community
- Strong problem-solving skills and well organized
- Valid CPR and First Aid certificate
- Be available for full 8 weeks of program
Successful candidate will be required to provide upon hiring:
- A clear vulnerable sector screening
- A clean driver abstract
- Participate in our online Armatus Abuse Training and Health and Safety training required upon hiring,
HOURS: 35 hours per week
