The First Nations Education Steering Committee (FNESC) is an independent society led by a
strong and diverse board of about 100 First Nations community representatives. FNESC is
committed to improving education for all First Nations students in BC. FNESC works in
partnership with the First Nations School Association (FNSA), and the Indigenous Adult Higher
Learning Association (IAHLA), as well as other partner organizations.
We are currently searching Director, Secondary Graduation and Adult Education to play a key
role in supporting our commitment to improve education for all First Nation students in BC. This
position reports to the Executive Director and will be FNESC’s primary subject matter expert
and champion for all student mental health and wellness programs.
Duties and Responsibilities
Supervising the Manager, First Nations Schools Secondary Graduation and Adult
Education, the Senior Research and Policy Analyst, Secondary Graduation and
Adult Education, and the Administrative Assistant, Secondary and Adult Graduation
Programs. Ensuring that productivity and performance standards are met.
Overseeing the ongoing implementation of the Connected Classrooms Program for
First Nations Schools/Adult Education Programs;
Overseeing schools’ access to the Dogwood and Adult Dogwood, including oversight of
support to schools, interactions with DRUMS, policy work with the Ministry – including
considerations of dual credit – and monitoring school certification status for
Dogwood/Adult Dogwood access;
Leading and supporting new programs, such as the online senior secondary
courses by creating a learning management system, developing courses and
training for schools and, other related tasks;
Leading and supporting a First Nations Course Authorization Process;
Advocating for and supporting new adult funding policies and new secondary and
adult education centers, and supporting partnership arrangements to support
secondary and adult education for First Nations students more generally, including
working with the Ministry of Education on relevant policy and program development
that relates to students attending public and First Nation schools;
Supporting the implementation of the School Assessment Process in secondary and
adult centres,
Requirements:
The position will require an individual who has the following certifications, knowledge,
experience, skills and characteristics.
Degree in Education, Adult or Special Education, Education Administration or other
related or allied education field, preferably a Master’s degree and;
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the provision of direct service in First Nations
education system and understanding of First Nation issues in British Columbia;
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience;
Minimum of 5 years’ experience managing, directing and leading employees, and liaising
with various regulatory agencies;
Experience developing a variety of written reports, proposals and strategies and other
documentation in accordance with organizational directives and/or regulatory guidelines;
Extensive experience developing, managing and control of budgets;
Valid driver’s licence and a satisfactory criminal records check;
This position can be based at a home-office anywhere in British Columbia or at FNESC Office.
The normal office hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm. Some weekend and
evening work will be required, as will travel throughout the province of BC.
The salary for this position is $100,000 per year.
