Position Mission
This full-time position exists to support the mission of Prairie College “to establish God’s kingdom by equipping and mentoring individuals through biblically integrated education for life and careers that will meet the greatest needs of the world.” This specific role is to provide excellent leadership in the College Library, the T. S. Rendall Library.
Context
Prairie College has a one hundred-year heritage of excellent biblical, theological, and missional training. Maintaining an excellent theological library is therefore critical to our mission, as the library provides textbooks, research material, and student supports necessary for achieving the College’s overall mission. The library, in many ways, is the academic heart of the College. The library director is a co-curricular faculty position.
Duties and Responsibilities
Overall library administration:
Personnel management of all library staff
Policy and procedure development and evaluation
Implementing policies and procedures using the automated library system — this includes some systems administration functions
Planning short and long-term goals for the library that are aligned with the vision and mission of Prairie College
Working collegially with faculty and administration to advance library excellence
Direct daily operations of the library
Maintains library usage statistics necessary for Prairie’s ABHE accreditation
Communicates relevant and accurate information to faculty, staff, and students regarding library policies and operations
Budget:
Recommendations to administration on library budget amounts and distribution of amounts
Responsible for purchasing books and materials
Responsible for other library expenditures
Responsible for maintaining supporting budgetary paperwork
Collection management:
In consultation with faculty expertise, provides strategic guidance for the library collection, which includes the selection of books, periodicals, and other library materials to meet the needs of its primary clientele
Withdrawing library materials
Placement and accessibility of materials in the library
Ensures the security and safety of the collection
Archives — Institutional and Missions Archive:
Administration of budget
Selection and retention of suitable materials
Oversees processing of and access to materials
Recommends policy and procedures
Copyright:
Maintains files and provides information regarding Prairie copyrights
Serves as a copyright officer to be a source of information on Canadian copyright law and its application, to inform students and faculty, and to ensure institutional compliance
Textbooks:
Determines number of books to purchase to sell, working with both the faculty to determine textbook need, and with distributers to determine textbook availability
Administers all invoices and deposits
Keeps all records of financial transactions
Maintains an inventory of textbook holdings
External Liaison:
Maintains the College’s registration in various groups
Represents the College to external organizations of which the library or archives are institutional members
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Excellent computer skills
Highly organized
Enthusiastic endorsement of Prairie’s focus and approach to teaching the whole Bible
Passionate about preparing college students enrolled in a broad span of biblical, ministry, and vocational programs for ministry and work
Understanding of academic rigor appropriate to post-secondary education
Ability and skill to relate well to college-age students as well as community members
Qualifications
Mission: Knowledge of and adherence to Prairie’s mission, vision, core values, statement of faith,
and Community Covenant
Church: Understanding of and commitment to the local church
Education: A minimum level of a Masters degree in Library and Information Science, with preference for Bible/Theology at either the graduate or undergraduate level
Experience: Two or more years of library administration experience preferred. Experience in library services including circulation, cataloging and classification, library research methods, and supervisory experience.
English Language: Excellent knowledge of the structure and content of the English language, including composition and grammar
Team attitude: Must have the ability to work in and contribute to a team
In accordance with the standards of the government, preference will be given to qualified applicants who hold Canadian citizenship or are a permanent resident of Canada.
