Position Summary:
Since 2014, the KCDSB has coordinated and

facilitated Summer Learning Programs (SLPs) in its schools. Backed by research

conducted for the Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat, Ministry of Education,

which revealed that SLPs reduce summer learning loss and build self-confidence

for primary students, the SLPs are organized during July. Most students

enrolled in summer learning show increased enthusiasm for learning and improved

achievement levels. These and other successes of the SLPs have been well

documented both qualitatively and quantitatively. A substantial research

project undertaken by McMaster University and the University of Waterloo, with

STAR testing as an assessment platform, clearly indicates that while SLPs

organization and structures may vary, outcomes are consistently positive and

evident. A notable aspect of the program is support for students and parents

who experience more economic and social challenges in their daily lives,

enabling them to build positive and ongoing relationships with both teachers

and school administrators.

The KCDSB SLP is a vibrant learning program with an

innovative staff focused on increasing student faith development, well-being

and achievement.
