Your opportunity:
Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) is a non-profit organization that delivers an objectives-based program for massively scalable, seed-stage, science- and technology-based companies. Its mission is to accelerate the commercialization of science for the betterment of humankind. CDL is a global program with sites at Oxford, Paris, Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary, Halifax, Atlanta and Wisconsin. The program’s objective-setting process enhances the performance of technical founders who learn from the insights of experienced entrepreneurs, increasing their probability of success.

As the Director, Ventures, you will be responsible for leading all venture management and recruitment operational activities at CDL-Toronto, including full managerial oversight of all venture teams and supporting staff as they recruit, select, and support the ventures that participate in the CDL program each year. You will also have oversight of the budget, financial management and Human Resources Management of the Ventures portfolio.

You will play a pivotal leadership role in the development of strategic plans and the execution of strategic management initiatives related to venture business continuity planning and venture management, contributing towards the overall success of the Lab.

You will be actively engaged in promoting and communicating the activities and results of CDL-Toronto with internal and external stakeholders. The ability to foster meaningful and productive partnerships is foundational to the program and position success.

You will foster a team-based culture, create an environment where knowledge-sharing, support, training tools, coaching and staff development ensure that service levels meet or exceed expectations and foster a workspace that encourages, recognizes and rewards creativity, innovation and excellence, and personal accountability.

Essential Qualifications:
I. EDUCATION:
MBA or other relevant post graduate degree; a combination of equivalent education and experience will be considered.

II. EXPERIENCE:
A minimum of five (5) years related and progressive experience gained through private and public sector organizations that focused on applied research, innovation, commercialization, or entrepreneurship, as well as experience working in business (starting, owning or running a venture; corporate venturing; social venturing; family business) or working with business owners/entrepreneurs. Direct experience with business planning, business development, and operations functions. A record of leadership and vision combined with an awareness of current and emerging technology development, commercialization, and new venture development across the province and Canada.

III. SKILLS:
A creative but pragmatic strategic thinker with strong managerial, follow-through, and implementation skills. Outstanding time management skills and the proven ability to effectively delegate and supervise teams with varying levels of experience and skill. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate effectively to a diverse audience similar in breadth to our stakeholder groups that include students, faculty, staff, new venture CEOs, investment firms, corporate sponsors, fellows and associates, founding partners, scientists, and economists. Highly developed problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Excellent computer skills including GSuite and Microsoft Office applications.

IV. OTHER:
Strong understanding of business models and drivers of success in start-ups. Strong team-oriented work ethic with willingness to work independently and autonomously. Demonstrated respect for confidentiality and strong sense of professional ethics. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects or priorities simultaneously across multiple teams with strong organizational skills. Ability to handle ambiguity and work effectively in a dynamic and sophisticated organization. Familiarity with emerging communications technologies (i.e. Slack, Airtable, Salesforce) is preferred.
