The Director, Office of the Dean will represent the interests and priorities of the Dean, President and CEO through effective communication, coordination and strategic integration. The Director, Office of the Dean supports the Dean, President and CEO as “trusted counsel” with a wide range of confidential, complex, and sensitive executive, advisory, government relations and strategic duties.
Responsibilities
Tasks may include but are not limited to the following:
Serve as trusted advisor, sounding board, and resource to the Dean, President and CEO and acts as a member of the senior management staff.
Directs and supervises the Unit staff; manage and maintain day-to-day activities and events and provides longer-term strategic direction.
Leads strategic initiatives to advance the School’s mission on behalf of the Dean, President and CEO, including helping to define and support NOSM’s strategies, operations, and business priorities.
Oversees the day-to-day operations, advancement and communication of the Dean, President and CEO’s strategic priorities and initiatives based on clearly defined goals, metrics and implementation plans.
Prepare presentations and develops Annual Reports for the Dean, President and CEO.
Works closely with the Dean, President and CEO and other senior leaders on projects and issues of significant impact to the school. Collaborates with key stakeholders to help identify and resolve issues of substantial significance that affect the overall functioning of the school.
Builds and nurtures relationships to serve as a resource and point of contact for senior leadership, faculty, staff, learners, and other key constituents to resolve complex issues and help move forward strategic priorities.
Participates in key meetings with faculty, leadership, and others. Accurately represent the position of the Dean, President and CEO in internal meetings and discussions to help drive understanding and move decision-making forward.
Builds relationships with key University partners and critical external bodies to advance operational goals and ensure sufficient and substantive information flow.
Facilitates decisions that senior staff need to receive feedback on from the Dean, President and CEO. Supports the needs of the staff in their ability to raise critical issues with the Dean and receive needed responses, guidance and decisions.
Fields and responds to requests to the Dean, President and CEO from academic and administrative portfolios. Oversee transfer of projects to other stakeholders as appropriate.
Assists in ensuring that the Dean, President and CEO’s meetings are effective with realistic objectives, appropriate preparation, and that the Dean is well-prepared. This may mean querying and pushing back with stakeholders, guiding others in their preparation for their interactions with the Dean, President and CEO, preparing agendas or appropriate high-level briefing materials for the Dean.
Works with Communications to revise speeches, correspondence, presentations, talking points, proposals, nominations for awards, and reports for the Dean, President and CEO as well as prepare own correspondence as the Dean, President and CEO’s representative.
Functions as a gatekeeper to assure prioritization of the Dean, President and CEO’s time. Responds to a wide variety of inquiries from internal and external stakeholders, faculty, learners and staff.
Represents the Dean, President and CEO in hiring key staff and senior administrators.
Performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
Master’s degree (preferably in business Administration, Public Administration / Public Affairs, Biological Sciences, Health Sciences, Organizational Development or other related field) from a recognized Canadian institution with accreditation or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Project management and/or LEAN training
Advanced technical, written and computer skills to support administrative functions
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience in a senior leadership role, including significant management experience, preferably in a unionized environment
Experience working in an education setting or healthcare/clinical environment is considered an asset
Demonstrated knowledge of program support and experience with developing and implementing administrative and business processes is required
Additional knowledge of strategic planning, change management and academic programs is preferred
Excellent project management skills.

Indigenous language skills would be considered an asset
