Description
The Brantford Booth Centre is a 58-bed emergency men’s shelter and Correctional Residential Facility (CRF) offering housing and reintegration supports to those in the Brantford-Brant area. This is a busy 24/7 facility that operates from a housing-focused and harm-reduction framework to reintegrate those we serve successfully back into their communities.
This is a casual/relief position with no standard weekly hours of work and no guaranteed work hours. Work will be offered on an as needed basis. Applicable shifts include a ½ hour unpaid meal break.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare and cook & provide quality food services for clients.
- Prepare menus two months in advance in coordination with the Residential Services Manager.
- Prepare & cook meals in accordance with posted menus.
- Supervise the kitchen staff.
- Maintain the highest level of hygiene and cleanliness while performing all duties.
- Have thorough knowledge of all equipment, equipment function and its efficient and safe operation.
- Keep all work areas clean, tidy, and sanitary.
- Keep all equipment clean and in accordance with health/good food safety practices.
- Perform all kitchen cleaning tasks as well as the washing of dishes, pots, and pans, as required.
- Record the count for all meals served.
- Deal with and report any problems, staff problems, organizational breakdowns, or necessary changes to the menu to the Residential Services Manager.
- Perform all other related tasks as requested by the Residential Services Manager.
- Prepare all Kitchen staff schedules one month in advance with approval by Residential Services Manager.
- Order, manage and store all stock and supplies in accordance with safe health standards.
- Participate in all staff meetings and in-service training opportunities.
- Represent The Salvation Army Booth Centre in a professional manner.
- Ensure that all Health and Safety standards, OHSS standards are adhered to and followed through.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- College diploma or Certificate of Food Management/Preparation, and/or a combination of education and life-related experience in the field of food preparation.
- Two years’ experience in supervising and directing staff.
- Minimal 2 years working experience in the institutional/commercial food industry.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and effective interpersonal skills.
- Maturity and ability to exercise sound judgment.
- First Aid & CPR and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and Food Safety certificates.
- Ability to work both independently and under supervision.
- Ability to lift/carry loads up to forty pounds.
- Provide an original copy of Criminal Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.
- Flexibility in scheduling is required and will include shifts on weekday/weekends.
- An understanding of the mission and purpose of the Salvation Army in Canada and the Brantford Booth Centre.
- NOTE: Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Successful candidates will be required to provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening.
