Description
The Janitor is responsible for performing janitorial duties which ensure The Salvation Army Thunder Bay C.A.R.S. is maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary manner in compliance with applicable standards.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Accountabilities:
- Maintain the general upkeep of both internal facility and external property
- Clean floors, washrooms, windows, dusting, collecting and disposing of garbage and sweeping
- Spot washes accessible walls, strips, waxes and buffs floors, shampoos carpets.
- mowing lawns, keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice, cleaning main floor outside windows, picking up litter, sweeping sidewalks, gardening/watering and pruning shrubs, raking.
- Check doors and windows to ensure building security as required during each shift.
- work in compliance of the OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by the Salvation Army’s health and Safety policies and procedures
- Report safety concerns and repair issues to supervisor/management immediately upon discovery
- Request janitorial supplies to be purchased as needed and restock supplies
- On the midnight shift and weekend day shift, cover the Front Desk Attendant for their ½-hour meal break and for security checks.
- Perform other position related duties as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This position is considered casual/relief with no guaranteed hours
- Some weekend and evening work may be required
- Work may be physically demanding
- Required to wear a name tag supplied by employer
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS:
- Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent
- Minimum of one (1) year of prior related experience including life skills, and general familiarity with cleaning and maintenance procedures and equipment
- Self-directed with strong organizational/time management skills
- Self-motivated and disciplined, able to work with minimal supervision
- Good interpersonal skills
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Have current First Aid/CPR Certification.
- Be able to lift/move up to 50 pounds as required.
- Must adhere to safety procedures and regulations.
- Immunization for Hepatitis B & Tuberculosis Testing
- Pleasant and courteous disposition; the ability to work well with other people.
- Provide a current original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.
- Participate in Health & Safety Training as well as other professional development and training
SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:
- Ability to comply with instructions, both verbal and written, work co-operatively with others, and complete all assigned tasks to a satisfactory level.
- Must be able to handle the physical demands of the position, which include moving, lifting, bending, standing or walking and pushing, pulling or carrying heavy objects
- Ability to operate cleaning equipment and tools, mopping/sweeping, bending/twisting/lifting
