Description
The Janitor is responsible for performing janitorial duties which ensure The Salvation Army South Windsor Citadel is maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary manner in compliance with applicable standards.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Service Responsibilities
- Responsible for any combination of light cleaning duties to maintain defined work areas in the ministry unit.
- Ensure the weekly upkeep of the facility i.e., empty all garbage receptacles, put garbage out for designated garbage day and return recycling and composite bins when emptied, vacuum all carpeted areas, sweep all tiled areas, wash floors and baseboards in tiled areas, clean all glass areas; windows and ledges etc. dust all offices and furnishings.
- Ensure kitchen cleanliness at all times, clean and polish sinks, counter tops and fixtures; clean washrooms (toilets, sinks, floors), restock washrooms and hand sanitizers, and distribute received material as required.
- Wipe down all tables, chairs, and door handles, and checks, cleans, moves, arranges, and dusts furniture as required.
- Identify/report to supervisor any repairs that may require an external service provider.
- Check doors and windows to ensure building security.
- Monitor and maintain stock of regularly used items, i.e., mops, brooms, lights, supplies etc., and notify office of needed supplies as required.
- Perform minor repairs such as electrical (change light bulbs) and plumbing (unblocking toilets, troubleshooting flushing issues), reports safety concerns and major repair issues to supervisor.
- Spot wash accessible walls, strip and wax floors, spot cleaning, and shampoo carpets as required.
- Ensure the Corps building is set up and ready for all rental groups.
- Maintain the security of property at all times.
- Ensure the general upkeep of external property, keeping sidewalks and entrances clear of snow and ice, including salting, litter pick up and up-keep of storage shed.
Health and Safety
- Contribute to the safety of staff, guests, etc. (e.g., clear fire exits, cleans spillage; no obstacles inside/outside the building, keeping sidewalks and entrances clear of snow and ice, including salting, litter pick up etc.)
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Monitor and maintain mixed cleaner bottles for custodial use. Ensure that all bottles contain WHMIS compliant labeling.
Perform other duties as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This is a permanent part time position based on 4 to 9 hours per week.
- The incumbent is required to lift/move up to 30 pounds.
- The incumbent’s work environment is typically in the entire facility and designated properties.
- The performance of the job requires operating industrial cleaning equipment and tools, mopping/sweeping, bending/twisting/lifting, and fine motor skills.
- The performance of the job requires moderate to high attention when handling hazardous chemicals and using non-motorized/general cleaning equipment.
Normal Hours of Work: Schedule may vary according to operational requirements; flexibility is required; may include split shifts, day, afternoon, and evening shifts, Monday through Saturday and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break where applicable. The supervisor will set the work schedule in consultation with the incumbent.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Completion of Secondary School Education
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Minimum of one (1) year of prior related experience including life skills, custodial, and general familiarity with cleaning and maintenance procedures and equipment.
- Knowledge of Health & Safety Standards.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
- Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
- Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
- Represent the organization in a positive, professional, and engaging manner.
- Exhibit good listening and interpersonal skills, have strong oral/written communication skills.
- Self-motivated/disciplined.
- Capable of working with minimal supervision.
