The salary range for this position is:
Recruitment range: $55,317- $ 62,259 starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.
Performance range: starting salary to max of $72,307 is available through annual performance increases.
Job Summary
The Advisor is responsible for advising all potential, pre-program and admitted on-campus and distance students about career prospects/opportunities, admission requirements, specialization streams, student resources including financial aid, housing, International student advising, First Peoples House, HSD Indigenous Student Support Centre, Counselling and Health Services and others. Advising requires extensive knowledge of UVic policies, program requirements, transfer credit and block credit arrangements, as well as a comprehensive understanding of the Child and Youth Care field and employment opportunities. Advising is constant in nature from the initial student contact until the final approval of graduation requirements and involves communication via email, phone and in person. The Advisor is responsible for coordinating the entire admissions process for all on campus and distance applicants to the degree program. The Advisor provides guidance to the Advisor Assistant position to assist in carrying out administrative advising and admission duties.
The School of Child and Youth Care views “advising” as a collaborative relationship between student and academic advisor to promote student success throughout the degree program. Students seek and receive guidance with academic program planning, preparing for registration, resolving academic problems, offering academic/educational advice, accessing student resources within and outside the university community, and ensuring their graduation requirements are complete.
Job Requirements
This position requires a Bachelor’s degree with 3-5 years’ related-experience working in a post-secondary educational environment with an emphasis on admission administration, student advising, student record systems and demonstrated communication, writing and presentation skills.
Related experience communicating with students at the post-secondary level in an advising role. This requires interaction with on-campus (individual or group advising sessions) and on-line students (e-mail, telephone, virtual sessions if required).
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Excellent written skills; ability to communicate effectively through e-mail correspondence with potential, current, returning and graduated students;
Ability to exercise good judgment in decision-making during the application and admission process;
Superior organizational and time management skills while managing a heavy workload that requires flexibility to respond to fluctuating demands;
Effective information gathering and analytical skills;
Experienced user of office software; previous experience using student information and reporting systems such as Banner, AIRS, FAST, TCS and SAS.
