The Academic Affairs Advisor provides expert advice in the application and administration of academic policies governing all academic (staff and faculty) personnel within the Faculty of Applied Sciences and its Schools. The position is responsible for ensuring all hiring and workload assignments are consistent and in compliance with the appropriate employment agreement (SFUFA, CUPE, APSA, TSSU or applicable academic or research policy). The Advisor coordinates all hiring activities related to the recruitment of both staff and faculty members within the Faculty of Applied Sciences.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or other relevant discipline and three years of related experience in administrative and staffing activities in a post-secondary environment or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Excellent knowledge of University policies, procedures, protocols, and governance.
Excellent knowledge of the fundamentals of strategic academic planning, and academic personnel relations in a university context.
Excellent knowledge of employment and labour legislation (e.g., Employment Standards, Labour Code, Employment Equity, Pay Equity, Human Rights).
Ability to interpret and apply collective agreement and administrative policies and procedures.
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build consensus and identify solutions to complex and contentious problems, and the ability to investigate issues and defuse complaints.
Excellent analytical, administrative, project management, planning, organizational skills.
Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills.
Ability to train and provide work direction to support staff.
Ability to exercise tact, mature judgement and diplomacy when dealing with faculty, non-academic personnel, staff, and senior administrators.
Ability to handle highly confidential information with discretion.
Ability to work in a highly demanding environment where issues are diverse and complex.
Ability to accomplish objectives, set priorities, and meet strict deadlines.
Ability to arrange suitable transportation for work at multiple campus locations.
Proficient in the use of standard office applications and enterprise-level information systems.
This position is based in SFU Burnaby campus but may be required to work at the SFU Surrey Campus to provide coverage.
